I can attest to the fact that there is absolutely nothing wrong with the AF system on the 6D......at least not on mine.

I'm an ardent supporter of the 6D. Mine seems to be a good copy and has served me well. But after almost 4 years with it I've come around to accepting the peripheral points really do suffer from intermittent amnesia.

We were out at the lake a week ago. 6D + 24-70 2.8 II. 15:15 MT. Clear sky, searing sun. A front lit bright green rod with several black segments was tucked neatly into one of the supports on the wharf. When framed the green rod was against the light blue sky. No shortage of contrasting edges for the AF system to lock on to.

Not one of the peripheral points would lock. I shifted a little left and right, perhaps the square in the OVF wasn't placed dead center over the AF sensor point. Nope. The thing could not acquire an AF lock anywhere on the rod. Nor could the peripheral points hit the blue and orange lure dangling at the end of the line.

Granted a thin green rod and a small lure could legitimately be a hard target from the distance I was shooting at.

The center point nailed it instantaneously. Went back and forth a few times. The peripheral points were unequivocally useless in that situation.

The 6D is a good camera but let's call a spade a spade. The AF system is seriously lacking.

On topic, anyone have ISO 6400 & 128000 long-ish exposure (15-30 sec untracked or tracked bulb up to 120 sec) milky way shots at 24mm with the 6D2 available?

Then maybe you should buy a camera that will do the work for you. ;-)a

Not work for me. Work as intended. There is no reason for the AF points not function in that scenario.

Focus and recompose is all well and good but we shouldn't have to implement a workaround for features that are supposed to just work. Had the points been all cross type maybe this wouldn't be an issue. But they're not and it is. Fair criticism.

Real photographers who use focus and recompose are also really bad at math.

If it wasn't for the garbage this thread would be dead.

Sorry but I see nothing here that could not be accomplished with a disposable camera

Well then.....perhaps you would be so kind as to post something that cannot be accomplished with a disposable camera.

I'm sure everyone would love to see your pictures.

Edit: I just went through a bunch of your postings.....do you even own a camera? I see lots of Canon bashing posts by you but I was not able to find any pictures that were actually taken by you.

Just curious......
