I'd completely forgotten about it but it was only when the boy's presented me with a bottle of Courvoisier VSOP Cognac to keep me warm in the mountains that I realised that I'd be spending my 69th birthday alone:oops:...............but what a birthday!

The pics aren't brilliant but this bird is only found in small pockets numbering 600 sq kms of state forest conservation areas with an estimated population of only 13000 birds. I discovered it purely by following the call for nearly an hour, which was a feat in itself as I'd left my hearing aids at home. The call is loud and beautiful but the birds are very hard to find due to their colouration and the dark of the rainforest. We live and learn and I'll take the flash next time. Luckily, they were preoccupied with the female nesting and the mail displaying. I only wish that i could have got better shots as the male display is stunning but any shot is better than none I guess as the chance of seeing them again is pretty slim. The vid shows how dark it can be in the rainforest but go here to hear the male's call (turn your volume up while you peruse the forum) and you won't be disappointed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwh_LngD0Vg (external link)

My wife and I had an enthralling 10 minutes listening to the incredible range of mimicked bird calls in the video - great job in recording this challenging encounter. Shooting at F5.6 in a rain forest is a big ask but the photos have scrubbed up very well, much better than my efforts with the 5D Mk III; looks like the 6D has excellent noise characteristics. You should get yourself a 400mm F2.8L...:-)

Cheers

Dennis

OK, I've done a lot of searching but most articles refer to damp ingress due to taking a lens from a warm to cold climate and vice versa but this is not my worry.

I intend to spend up to 8hrs a day in the rainforest where relative humidity can be as high as 100%. I'm wondering about the possibility of moisture ingress and subsequent mould due to the zoom action. I've already collected a bit of dust inside so I'm not convinced that the seals are as good as some claim them to be.

Opinions welcomed as to whether this is just an "occupational hazard" that one has to contend with in these environments?
