What's amazing is that there's such stringent patent trolling leading to frivilous lawsuits and money grabs, but when it comes to a real company making a real product, they get shafted by cheap china made garbage.
Yep. Case in point for patent trolling here is BlackRapid. They have been using their lawyers to aggressively bully some really fantastically innovative but small/artisanal companies out of the sling market (Luma Labs, CarrySpeed, etc.), based on their totally legal but also totally BS patent on the "sling" concept for cameras (for which there is strong evidence for prior art). However, all their lawyer power does nothing to exclude the offshore clones. On the other end of the spectrum, because BlackRapid knows they cannot actually win in court against companies with enough $$ to take them on (e.g., OpTech), they leave the bigger companies alone as well. So, really, it is just the little (and legitimately innovative) guys they crush. At the same time, while excluding real innovation from the market through investment in lawyer-power, BlackRapid refuses to invest any thought or development in improving their connectors, so we are stuck with the same old crappy connectors that loads all twist/torque forces onto unscrewing the mount rather than relieving it (e.g., as with the SunSniper or Custom SLR connectors). Really crappy company, embodying the worst of gaming the system in the name of greed and suppression of independent design and innovation IMHO. I avoid them and their products as much as the cheap knock-offs.
