My images at work.
I have been fortunate enough to be the photographer of the Charlottetown Islanders of the QMJHL for the last several seasons. I thought my fellow sports photographers might be interested in how my images are used by the club for promotional purposes. The top example is a composite of three images which I have taken and the second one is from a post goal celebration.

Despite having blagged my way through sports photography over a few years I shot my first hockey game at Bracknell yesterday....Loved it!

Through 9 years of shooting, I had never caught a stick break until this season. After our last game, I have now caught two, both in the same season....Here's the most recent

Worth the wait. Have ever caught a stick stuck in the seam of the boards?

I think I've only SEEN that happen once at one of our games, let alone get a chance to capture it. Probably one of the rarest things in our barn.

Port Huron goalie misses with his stick but gets a pad stop

i HATE the lighting in our barn. High Pressure Sodium/Mercury Vapor (i never remember which is orange light, which is white ISH, but its so very flat. could stand to have another stop or two of intensity too...

-im just trying. sometimes i succeed

these pictures were shot from the very same spot, (different periods obviously) and you can see the color shift from the lights on the dasher...

i just noticed it, here....lol

A shot from the weekend game between the Charlottetown Islanders and Quebec Remparts of the QMJHL. The Remparts won in O/T after the Islanders staged a valiant comeback.

Thanks very much. The lighting is a challenge here too. Lots of colour casts but the anti-flicker on the 5D MKIV does make it much easier particularly where the area being photograph is small and majority of the light is from one fixture.

Try bumping your ISO. You may find better results shooting at 5000 or even 6400. The Mk III’s pretty good with high ISO if I’m not mistaken. I know in the rinks I’ve shot in that having a lower shutter speed and trying to keep the ISO down with my 1D MkIV gives somewhat similar results. I get much sharper images at ISO 5000 giving me 1/1600. Easier to pull the brightness down and deal with what ends up being minimal noise than going the other way and pushing under exposed shots which can really introduce substantially more noise.

Posted this somewhere else, but just discovered this thread. This looks like the right place:

Hi all - Shooting D1 level college hockey soon. Well-lit arena. Canon 7D Mark II with Sigma Art Glass. Can someone recommend a good shutter speed and also some other helpful settings? So far, all of my action shooting has been sports car racing and pro tennis both of which have been outdoors. Thanks!
