A friend of mine who bought the D850 came over and we decided to swap gear for the rest of the week. He's borrowing my a9 and lenses while I have his D850, 24-70/70-200 and 35 for the rest of the week. First thing I notice is the size. It's noticeably heavier but not disgustingly slow, maybe because the a9 is already 673 grams and the RRS plate adds another 95 grams to it. The D850 is 915 grams or 147 grams more but arguably more comfortable to hold because of the grip and better ergonomics. Hearing the mirror slap is a throwback. And the AF points seem to cover maybe 40% of the screen, a huge drop from the 91% of the a9. And have to get used to shooting at 1/2x or even 1/3x FL, so I'm at 1/125 or faster with the 35, and 1/125 or 1/250 with the 24-70. No more crazy 1/15 or 1/20 because of no IBIS. DR though is very impressive and 46mp to crop is crazy.

I love shooting the a9 but it's still like most Sony cameras to me, it feels more technical and like I'm using a computer for computational photography at times while going back to a DSLR feels more traditional, and old school at times. I'm of the camp that neither is the best and both have their places. I love an EVF, I like an OVF. I love shooting with h the rear screen on a mirrorless, hate shooting with one on a DSLR.

FYI, these bags have been around for a LONG time, look up lowepro flipside on ebay. I think the 300 has only two rows, so it definitely depends on lenses you bring. I have the sport 15L from a long while back, and while it's only two rows, it can accomodate the 135A adapted in vertical position! if you pack it neatly, you can hold a lot. 16-35 + 35 f1.4, 85 f1.4 + body or 2, 2 flashes. it would be tight, but probably can fit all that. When you shoot, you'll have the lens + body + flash on body, so that clears up a lot of space in the backpack, and you'll have plenty of space to work from bag to do lens changes. attached, 4 lenses, 2 flashes in a 15L flipside bag.

EDIT: 400 would be a sure thing and not too much bigger. I also have the older 400, but I dont like the look and feel as much as the "Sport" series.

THIS IS A LOW QUALITY PREVIEW. Please log in to see the good quality stuff.

Seems like the 300 has three rows and looks like it'll fit some primes well. It's 16.5 liters while the 400 is 21L, has room for a 15" laptop, and has thicker waist strap. It'll no doubt fit more gear, feel more comfortable over longer hours because of the padded waist strap, and can fit a computeR. The 300 will only fit a lot 10" tablet, has a thin unpadded waist strap, and has 5 less liters of space.

yah i saw the padded waist strap of the 400AW that's why i'm leaning towards it. it will become my vacation bag so the laptop space is needed as well.

Took a visit to the Palm Beach Science Center with the kids yesterday. We were lucky to be there during feeding time.

Shooting through aquarium glass, as seen in the pics above and below, isn't always flattering or easy. The A99ii isn't thought of as a high-iso monster, but it acquitted itself nicely IMO.

I got to bust out the long glass on the way out, when an (invasive) iguana my daughter had spotted on the drive in was still perched on his rock some 3.5 hours later. I should have taken the time to slap on the polarizer, but it is what it is.

what are you shooting with these days?

A9 with 35 2.8/55 1.8/ 85 1.8. Been meaning to get a standard zoom, since I sold off my 24-70 GM. In hindsight I should've held onto it until I got my RRS base plate. But since then I've used my 55 most of the time, too lazy to swap lenses all the time. I realized that I'm more of a zoom guy. Enjoying my buddies D850 and 24-70 VR, heavy as a brick, but quality. Definitely different going from a silent shutter to a loud smack. Silent shooting via live view is just useable, any fast movement and it's almost useless.

Sad day yesterday, I had to get my cat put to sleep. I had him for 10 years but he developed heart failure and his heart scan yesterday confirmed the worst. Amazing how these wee guys become part of the family.

I am so sorry for your loss... We have 2 small doggies (10 & 9) and yes they really do become part of families. We don't even have kids so we kinda treat them like our children.

This mural in downtown San Antonio was built by renowned Mexican Architect/Artist, Juan O'Gorman in time for the 1968 fair. The massive piece of art was built of about 400,000 rock chips cemented into meter square tiles. There are twelve colors in the mural and eleven of them are natural stones from Mexico. There was one shade of blue that he could not find, and that they had to get from Italy. The impressive mural is 130 ft long and 30 ft tall.

Nice one Alfredo...it's a beautiful mural.

You're reminding me that I still need to order a nodal slide. What slide are you using?

Can't wait to get past these dang shingles, and start doing my own blue hour urban shoots, now that the temperatures are getting really comfortable.

Thanks David. Yes it's beautiful indeed. I hope you can visit one day.

I haven't purchased a nodal slide yet. I haven't had much opportunity for horizontal panos yet. I'll probably pickup one of the FLM slides.

I'm looking forward to seeing more urban shots from you. It's fun shooting early in the morning or late.

Beautiful shot.

What are you using to stitch the shots together?

Thank you Tim. I'm using Photoshop to stitch the shots. I use Auto Align and then Auto Blend. The key thing in the field is to lock your vertical plane. My FLM ballhead has a dedicated tilt lock knob for this purpose. It prevents the camera from moving side to side as you pan up on a vertical plane. This is kind of a poor man's version of a tilt shift lens. There is a tiny bit of sharpness dropoff when stitching this way but the resulting image still looks great when zoomed in.

I wonder if my Husky tripod would work for vertical panos? It has tilt using an arm like a video head that doesn't effect panning and a center shaft that raises the camera platform vertically too.
