Pitch black in there and the camera saw it better than I did. Once again, amazed at the 7D's ability to focus in very poor light.

ID anyone? Can't find it in the Field Guide to Birds of Australia but I'm guessing it's some sort of quail?

I'm a new 6D owner. I used it to take some sunrise photos over this past weekend and an odd thing happened. I was on a tripod using the 16-35 f/2 IS and a shutter release. Everything was going fine and suddenly, the camera wouldn't take a photo... I hadn't changed any settings, though the sun had just appeared over the horizon. I didn't hit the 1/4000 limit or anything. I missed a series of shots.. and it started taking photos again.

I can't seem to figure out what I did wrong.. or what changed to prevent the shots. Any ideas? Btw, I did change to live view to see if that made a difference.. still wouldn't take a photo. Later in the sunrise sequence, both live view and viewfinder photos started working again.

Edit: I doubt there is a problem with the camera itself. I'm sure this is user error.... I just can't figure it out for the life of me.

Did the sky change enough for it to have trouble focusing? If it can't lock focus it won't fire.

Using a remote release, were you still looking through the viewfinder to verify focus?

I know sometimes I will be shooting clouds or a sunrise/ set and the sky changes enough that the camera can't see what it needs to lock focus.

I'm guessing that's what happened. What threw me was still not being able to focus when I switched it to live view. It's getting used to a new camera body, I suspect. I took photos with it later that evening in a very poorly lit reception room.. and it focused every time. Perhaps the contrast was great enough and with the clouds, it wasn't.

It has been my experience that the camera is much slower focusing in live view, However i am certainly no expert and that could be due to operator error?

I too, have had this happen on more than one occasion.
