Turtle in our backyard.

I've never seen a turtle this color. Could it be an escaped pet? Anyone know what kind of turtle this is?

It could be a juvenile three-toed box turtle (terrapene carolina triunguis) perhaps? Close to this I think.

I am terrible with this, I even went to a turtle registry site to find it. Hopefully somebody will find out what this really is.

The three toed doesn't have the bright colored markings typical of the common eastern box turtle. The name comes from three toes on the rear feet. It is the official reptile of the state of Missouri so next time you see him/her pick it up, count the toes and point it in the right direction. ;-)a

We get those guys here in the DfW area around lake Lewisville. I see them more often in the early spring while hiking the woods. I don't see them often but do run into a few a year.


Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.
