This shot does not go close to capturing the beauty that we saw as we flew around the storm clouds. The setting sun was lighting up the western side of the clouds, which were boiling up dramatically to the point where they pushed straight through a triple layer of thin high clouds. After landing in Armidale, we watched lightning flashing from these clouds for some time.

That is so weird! It looks as if you printed your photo, cut it into strips, then moved every 2nd strip down about the length of a square before sticking it all back together!!

Actually - hard as it seems to believe, it might be a logging strategy that aims to minimise disruption of wildlife. If that was the aim, the still-green patches would be left until the now-bare sectors had regenerated at least enough to provide cover for whatever the endemic species might be!
