I dont think the bold bit is correct. Lightroom desktop CC and lightroom CC will both be cloud based. The difference will be in the interface. Desktop is current setup and the other is geared towards tablets and mobile devices. There wont be a standalone version after the next update to 6.xx

there is a bit of a confusion going on in terminology, we are saying the same thing...when I say Desktop version, that is Lightroom Classic, it uses your computer for file storage, not the cloud. So it is as close to standalone as Adobe will have going forward, it is part of the Creative Cloud yes, but it does not use the cloud for the app or file storage. If you still want to keep your files all on hard drives, then Classic is the way to go.

damn, that sucks big time.

I'm ok with the way Nik is even without upgrades. Would suck for it to die.

It's not the value of the software per se, it's the savings vs having to pay a monthly fee. Taken on it's own, $10 a month doesn't seem bad. But that's $120 a year. Every year. Add the $50 a year I pay for Backblaze. and we're at $170 a year just for photography related software. That's not any office/business related software, entertainment subscriptions, etc. The myriad subscription services add up quick to bleed you dry. Bearing in mind that there are lots of other things that have to be paid for, from professional license renewals each year, professional software subscriptions and organization memberships, and it starts to make a lot more sense to eliminate excess expenditures in all their forms. As a very wealthy friend used to say, if you mind your pennies your dollars will mind themselves.

Of course, there will soon come a time when moving to CC is unavoidable, but with the increasing number of competitors out there I may just switch over to something else. Who knows.

Whether its an outright purchase or a subscription, you're going to pay for photoshop either way....and you're either outright paying $700 to own something that probably won't be useable in 5 years, or paying $120 a year to subscribe to the latest version of the software. You can jumble the numbers around however you want to see what's more economical, but unless you're pirating the software or have some sort of discount (like when I bought CS5 with a student discount during my MBA), you're going to be paying a lot of money for photoshop.

I'm open to cheaper alternatives and have tried capture one and a bunch of others.....even stupidly bought photo ninja at one point, but nothing has ever been as good as adobe's products so they basically control the pricing.

Yeah I haven't been able to us in in PS for a while now...it works in LR.

The workaround I found is to export the jpeg, and right click the file in explorer/finder to open it with Nik outside of PS.

I tried several different locations that I found people sticking plugins into...none of them worked. A friend has it working...I am going to test out his method tomorrow.

Good to know someone got it working. I will wait to upgrade PS and Lightroom for a day or 2. Keep us posted please.

Ever since Google announced they were killing off Nik I’ve been preparing myself for the time when it stops working in later versions of PS.

Hope someone finds a fix, but for my part my PS skills have improved and I don’t need to rely on it any more.

In regard to the issue of the Nik plugin's not working, will this video I made last November solve the problems you're having?

I haven't installed the newest version of PS yet so I don't know if my video is still viable. I just thought I'd repost it for anyone that has updated their PS to the newest version and have lost the ability to access the Nik plugins. Hopefully, it will work just fine and they will report that back here for those who haven't done it yet.
