Happy new camera! I love mine.

I like to keep things simple (for my poor little brain) so I shoot in Manual with Auto ISO. The "SET" button is assigned to exposure compensation and auto focus is set to "Back Button" (AF-On button). AF is in servo mode all the time.

This is what I use for everything on both my 1DX and 7D2 as I can adjust everything I need without even opening a Menu. If I need to focus manually then I just don't press the AF-On button. If I need slow/fast shutter speeds then I just twiddle the front dial - more or less depth of field then I just twiddle the rear dial. If I wan't to over/under expose then I just press the SET button and dial in what I want with the front dial. This is very quick to do and allows 3 or 4 different exposure levels on a circling Buzzard. The whole advantage of the setup is that there is no need to take your eye away from the viewfinder, pretty much regardless of what you are shooting.

Naturally you need to keep an eye on the ISO (don't want it getting too silly!) but that is in the viewfinder - no need to loose your subject?

This works very well for me - give it a try, you might like it :-)

Well my first day out with the 1dx was a disaster. Managed approximately 40 shots during which the camera stopped working 6 times. It would just power off. Tried my other fully charged battery, tried different lenses and memory cards but the same thing kept happening. Total loss of power. Did a google search and it looks like the PCB is knackered. So I will be phoning the shop in the morning where I got it from. Not happy

Well I took the 1Dx back to the shop And they gave a full refund. Now I’m undecided what to do, all the other second hand 1dx’s are far more expensive, would a 1d mkiv be a massive step backwards ? I like to try all sorts of photography, motorsports, airshows, wildlife and a bit of Landscape too.
Would appreciate your thoughts

From what I've read, people who have had both prefer the 1D X. I like my 1D IV so much, I purchased another one as a back up. I think I've decided to stay with the 1D IV until there is a 1D X3 and I can pick up a ID X2 for similar reasons: people who have had the 1D X and the 1D X2 really prefer the ID X2. 10 fps seems fast enough for me most of the time and the colors the 1D IV produces amazed me. I bought a 16-35 f/4 IS along with my first 1D IV so I'd have a FOV of around 20mm. The 1.3X crop factor makes it odd for choosing landscape lenses but gives you that little bit longer FOV for wildlife, including birds. The only negative for me has been indoors with limited light, without a flash. I picked up a used 6Dc for a song and that solved that problem.

Anyway, as always, your mileage may vary but I'm satisfied that if I do my job, the 1D IV will perform flawlessly. At the moment, here in the States, you can pick up a stellar 1D IV and a 6Dc for the price of a 1D X.

Great reply. Thanks for taking the time to answer. There is a 1D mkiv near me with only 20k clicks on it and it’s in mint condition. Tempting

I,ll have used them both and the 1dx is better in every aspect, over the 1d IV
Faster and more accurat af system, better colours , and a lot less noise at high iso.

I owned both at the same time and I was always disappointed in the 1d Mark IV compared to the 1dx. Don't get me wrong, the IV is a good camera but it didn't match to my 1dx, especially when it came to night sports. I would save and wait for a 1dx.

Keep looking for a low mileage 1Dx, they can be found for less than $3K. I found mine in May with 12K shots on it for $2900.

That's why I carefully said.... people who have had both prefer the 1D X right at the beginning of my post. Some of us are budget limited and we have to make do with something a bit less than the top of the line... or even more one model removed. I have my sights set on a 1D X2 as I mentioned. It will be a couple years before I can afford one. The 1D X3 should be out sometime near the 2018 or 2020 Olympics and by then I should have enough saved to purchase a low mileage 1D X2.

Well I’ve managed to stretch my budget a little more and have bought a 1Dx with 44k clicks, advert says it’s immaculate and comes with a 12 month warranty. Fingers crossed this one works

Congrats. I'll bet it's everything you think it will be.
