On the roof of the house behind us. Scared us at first. We first thought it was a big bird of prey watching our 5 lb yorkie.

I think you should be concerned for your yorkie, that does looks like a bird of prey to me, but then I am really no bird expert....

Thanks for your concern, but not even the squirrels hide from them. "The turkey vulture is a scavenger and feeds almost exclusively on carrion. (external link)" I think this one is a juvenile. It's face is not yet bright red and the wing feathers aren't long enough.
