Anyone has a 50 + 85mm (Art or L) for modelshoots ?

I'm wondering if anyone has both, 50 Art + 85 Art (or 50L + 85L) ?
Don't you find them too close and do you use both for an outdoor modelshoot.

Isn't it a bit strange that you take first halfbody shots with a 50mm and then take the same set again with the 85mm for headshots ?
Coming closer with a 50mm for a headshot would have some distortion probably.
But a 85mm for a headshot + stepping back for halfbody shots looks practically the same as a 50mm halfbody, no ?

It's because I sold my 85L for a 85A and now I wonder if I will still use the 50 or not

I'm not sure this is what you are looking for, but here goes. I own the 50 STM, and 85 1.8. I wouldn't consider using 50mm on full frame for a H&S shot, and 85 puts me in the subjects personal space. For H&S with FF, I'd default to 135mm; on crop 85 works well. For full body/environmental shots, I'd go for the 35mm first. My 50 gets very little use. I don't do sitting portraiture.

I don't use a 50mm for people.

85 gets 90 percent of that use for less than full body and has heavy use for full body. 35mm gets quite a bit of use for full body.

Only 50 mm I have is an old MF Sears Auto 2.0. For a while I thought I would want a good 50, but I am mostly over that now.

I have had primes for awhile now. I actually DO find enough difference between the 50 and 85 to justify both however NOT for model shots. I use my 50 for travel and birthday parties as it's a very good all around lens. The 85 is a great lens for me for alot of uses.

WHERE you are in control of the shot =modelshots you would find that 8-12' distance between camera and subject produces the most flattering results of facial features. Not too pronounced and not too flat. So basically envision the size of your model and then that distance and then figure out where you need to be on the lens focal length. This is why the 200L works good for my needs because I shoot smaller subjects (kids). My kids to be exact. For adults the 135 would be just about right for head shots/waist up. The 85 would be perfect for full body in portrait mode. Works well for landscape mode as well but a tad further distance. The 50 works good for that.

All of this is subjective though. Do what you want, do different or do the norm.

I found plenty of difference between 24/35/50/135/200.... just hard as crap to walk around with all of them. So I'm kinda moving back to primes. I figure the 16-35 2.8 III could help replace the 24 that I sold. I'm a torn mix bag of GAS when it comes to what I really want. I may just sell everything and move all fuji then it's light enough I can have everything.

I'm kind of a gear-slut, like Talley, but with cheaper stuff. My primes range from 28 1.8, 35IS, 50 STM, 85 1.8, 100 2.8 macro (only), 135L, 200 2.8LII. I use them all. I'm considering a 300 f/4. I'd sell the 100-400Lc, but it ain't worth bothering anymore. I see that lens going for $600.

Depends on studio/environment working distance. Especially if using lighting & modifiers.

But the word model to me implies you want the longer focal length ideally.

Yes I meant for outdoor fashionshoots, switching between 35A & 85A seems more logic than between 50A & 85A, although they are both superb

The problem is when you have an almost perfect lens like the 50 Art it's difficult to sell such quality glass
In past I had the 35 Art but almost the whole model was on the picture, more in relation with the environment.

But then the 50 Art came out, it had a better bokeh/3D pop, so I sold my 35 Art for the 50 Art.
Now that the 85 Art is out, I guess I'll have to sell my 50 Art, each time a step up

However I miss my 35 Art as an allround prime, maybe I'll resell my 24-70 2.8L Mark I & 50 Art for the 35 Art again...

there is a reason every wedding and runway photog owns a 70-200 F2.8 (it gives them 85, 135 and 200 - and flexibility around each for cropping purposes)

the comment about the 50mm being great at parties is spot on - that is exclusively where I use to use my 50L - most of the time, 50 is just the wrong lens and that is why event photogs, who don't use zooms, use the 35/85 combo

as a side note, i have found the Tamron 45 1.8 VC a much easier and better one focal length choice than using a 50mm - you wouldn't think that 5mm would make that much of a difference, but so often when 50mm is just a bit too tight, a 45 makes an enormous difference and makes choosing to go with 1 lens much less stressful that certain types of photos won't be possible as is often the case with a 50

I just picked up a 32mmIS recently I really like it. Do you find some of your shots kinda soft with that lens?

Assuming you meant the EF 35mm f/2 IS USM, the answer is a resounding, "NO!". I've used this lens on 60D, 70D, 80D, 5Dc (same AF as your 5D2), 6D, and 1D4. It focuses as quickly and accurately as any other Canon lens. My guess is that if you are getting OOF results with this lens, you have just discovered your reason to buy a camera that can focus to modern standards/expectations​. Your 5D2 is using a 12-year old AF system. That is most likely the problem.

The lens is materially sharper at F2.2 than at F2 - and the center tack sharp zone at F2 doesn't really exist - sharpish just not tack sharp - but it is there at F2.2 in the center

The Canon 35F2 IS, is 'similar' to the Canon 35L gen 1, in that wide open and until stopped down by 1 full stop, it does not have sharpness extending to the edges - this seems almost by design - unlike the 35Lii or the newer Tamron 35&45 which are sharp to the edge nearly wide open.

Yes, that's what lens I'm referring to. I made some major typos sorry. Thanks for the input and you're right it does focus pretty quick.
