In challenging light I usually prefer this lens to my 70-200 2.8 IS 11 for basketball. This was one of my son’s high school games.

I use AI Servo. At 1.8 the depth of field is quite shallow. In these images the people were all more or less on the same focus plain.

Hey guys

Help me out here please. What the hell is going on here? I know the 85 1.8 is a fine lens and I have lots of photos that are tack sharp, but not with this shoot. I used a 5D Mark 3. Settings 1/200, F2.2, ISO 800. It shouldn't be this noisy and soft.

I've added a frame at pixel peeping level.

If you were using AI servo, it was probably adjusting, as it looks clearly back-focused to me (farthest shoulder is sharp, closest shoulder is not; back focused). It's sharp. It just missed accurate focus.

Very best,

Crap, that's what I also thought. I used AI Servo indeed. They were walking in the shots before this one, forgot to switch to One Shot. It's stupid that it missed focus though, my focus point was on his face.
