Wow a7rIII looks killer. Definitely a better fit for me than the a9. I might seriously sell the a9, eat the loss and get the a7rIII.

The a9 came out of a need for me since I booked a bunch of weddings and needed a second body and something faster than the a7rII as the sluggishness of thad body is a real detriment when shooting events. But the a7rIII checks all the right boxes for me, and is probably the perfect wedding/event cam.

My initial thought when I saw the announcement was to keep the a9 since it still has its upsides...but realistically speaking, if I had an a9 and an a7rIII, the a9 would be relegated to being a back-up and I can't see myself holding onto something that expensive if it isn't used very regularly. I got the a9 for $4k, so if I can sell it for $3,500, I can call it a $500 rental. If I can't fetch a fair price on the a9, then I'll wait.

Yes I have G.A.S. but the a7rIII is literally the perfect camera for me.

Perfect for me too. Events and portraiture like you.

I would do it. Sell the A9 and be the A7RII your second body on weddings.

If i can find $$$ for the A7RIII, i would love to keep the RII just because I shoot weddings.

MM, look at the one sold at Huckberry, they have an exclusive all black one that looks really nice with the same brown leather accents of the Ash one.

Do you have a link? All black would be nice.

Yes perfect wedding and portrait body. If I didn't shoot weddings/events I would be fine with the a7rII as the a7rIII is an incremental upgrade in a lot of ways....but the speed upgrade, dual card slots, and ergonomic improvements are a big deal for weddings/events. The a7rII is too sluggish for that type of shooting at the end of the day and the risk of missing shots is too high.

Too bad the a7rIII didn't come before the a9, as the timing didn't work in my favor. I'll have shot 4 weddings on the a9 by the time the a7rIII drops, so it's paid for itself, but would have been nice to get the a7rIII for these jobs and called it a day.

Well activity on this thread certainly picked up overnight. ߘ

The new a7RIII looks just about perfect for me. I wonder if weather sealing is improved. Did Sony improve the view finder?

Yes it does. Something that's missing on the A9.

I'm thinking no :-(

full specs of the A7riii has "-" under playmemories
https://www.sony.com …/ilce-7rm3/specifications (external link)

full specs of the A7rii has "yes" under playmemories
https://www.sony.com …/ilce-7rm2/specifications (external link)

on another section of the A7riii official product page it has this:

"One-touch remote & One-touch sharing
One-touch remote can turn a smartphone or tablet into a viewfinder/remote control. One-touch sharing transfers photos/videos to your device for social network site (SNS) sharing. Just install the PlayMemories Mobile app via Wi-Fi to your NFC-enabled Android device, and then touch the device to the camera to connect them. If you don’t have NFC, use QR code compatibility to pair the devices."

taking away playmemories would be serious blasphemy!

It looks like Sony has finally dethroned the 5D. Assuming the a7rIII plays as well with adapted glass as the a9, I suspect we'll see even more converts here.

I'm hoping for the same with adapted glass. I will definitely be a convert myself. I shot most of the last wedding with my a6500 and adapted Canon glass and did fine. I'll be adding FE glass as I go along

I got mine for $4000 as well and sold it for $3,800 with spare battery and RRS plate. I share the same feelings as you do, the a9 is a fast beast but I felt like I paid for specs that I didn't fully utilize. I wouldn't be considering this if not for the unexpected bonus at work.
