To get the whole face in focus you are absolutely right, but I like it when not much more than the eyes are in focus.

You do know not to try that with your mother/wife/GF? ; )

I dog sit "Bob The Pug" for my niece from time to time. Always a good time

Not a studio though just a bed, blanket and softbox.

If you're not using studio lighting you will likely be using the sun or a single flash unit as a lighting source, or a combination of the two. When the light is coming from a single source it can introduce several problems:

The light is harsh leading to contrast
The light tends to "flatten" the picture with little modeling in the portrait
The light can be coming from an inconvenient angle

Sure! I'm on my mobile so no lighting diagrams, sorry.

Setup was created with two speedlights and reflector:

- main, speedlight in gridded 60cm softbox camera left somewhat 45 degrees in angle and close
- rim, zoomed bare speedlight camera right high
- fill, silver reflector front of the subject filling shadows
- backround was a black cotton sheet

Shot this with YN622C+TX triggers in manual. I don't remember actual powersettings of the flashes though.

Hopefully this explanation gives some conception of the setup.

These look very nice to me, but I wish that the noses were sharper. The "People rule" to concentrate on just getting the eyes sharp usually covers the nose at the same time, but dogs have that extra bit of length we need to pay attention to.

Loving my new 85L 1.2, intense colors, incredibly accurate AF and bitingly sharp.

Christmas shoot last weekend...
