Which one do you guys like best? View from Elysian Park last night, overlooking the LA skyline.

My synology nas is wireless but if I want to access files quickly I connect by wire using Ethernet and it’s really quick (as if it’s just an internal drive). I was about to suggest that to you but realised you were already hard wired so I’m out of ideas. My cable is directly into my wireless router

Edit - if you mean the initial backup TO the nas this Is the beauty of apples timemachine. Whenever I connect my MacBook to the mains power (like at night when I’m not using it) it backs up the entire computer (drives/settings/installed programs etc) automatically wirelessly at regular intervals so i am never aware of the initial backup happening or how long it takes as by morning there are multiple versions of it. If I wasn’t using Mac I would definitely do the initial backup wired

I just did some research and found out that time machine can backup external drives, but they're excluded by default. This is the reason I stopped using time machine and have been using carbon copy cloner. Carbon Copy Cloner is pretty well automated too...its just really slow on my NAS. I'll give time machine another try!

Right now my LR catalog is sitting in two drives. I'm plan on using this 1TB USB SSD for stuff I'm currently processing and stuff that's fairly recent. 4TB USB HDD will hold my older stuff, PLUS will be a backup for my 1TB SSD.

I have a separate 4TB HDD which will back up my USB HDD. I prefer that this backup to stay on my NAS. Sooo..redundancy on everything...double redundancy on recent stuff.

yeah you can connect a usb drive and have timemachine include it in the backup, it’s pretty handy

Yeah I think I'm going to use Carbon Copy to backup my 1tb SSD "current" drive to my 4tb HDD whenever they're both connected via usb. And time machine to back everything up to a separate 4TB NAS each night.

one day i also need to step up my backup system. i'm really damn about it.

Meanwhile I'm so impressed with the focusing ability of the Sony 85mm F1.8. Last night I used my friends 85F1.8 at a theater play rehearsal, the settings was dark but I never have a single trouble with focusing. I remembered one day I shoot a small event on a small room. I used the 2470GM on the R2 and the 85GM on the A6000 hoping to get some candid shots and an extra reach. I had to ditched my A6000 back to the bag, it was useless, it could not focus. So i think I would sacrifice a little creamier bokeh for a better focusing 85. It's better than missing a shot as Gene once said. But I might go with the Batis for the better color and micro contrast, the Batis also have OSS. On youtube's comparison between the batis and the sony, both have the same focusing speed and both are silent. with the Sony I literally could not hear anything while focusing. So expect an 85GM to land at FM soon.

I have no interest in any other 85, and especially like the FE 85 for the button, love having that focus hold aka eye AF button for me.

Carlo, I know you are a big fan of the RX1R II, would you consider bringing that as your own camera to WDW? It’s T-3 weeks before my week long trip to Disney. The release date for the a7rIII is 11/30 and I fly out 12/2, so not sure I want to play the lottery and hope I get the a7rIII and 24-105 both on the same day. Got my iPhone X and it’s a big step up for me in terms of phone cameras. I have my wife’s Canon EOS M6 with several lenses. But the quality of the files isn’t that great and I could see myself carrying several lenses. So looking into renting the RX1RII for the week or even the Leica Q for a single camera, single lens option instead of renting a system and lenses.

Think it’d be a good idea to rent the RX1RII and supplement it with my phone for easy, stress free shooting and not worry about changing lenses? It’s my first time there in almost 30 years and my family’s first time there so not looking to overthink things.

i am so torn on buying a new lens or not. I miss my 70-200 from canon so badly. I was thinking of getting the 70-200 f4 from sony and selling my Rokinon 135 f2 since i won't need something in that focal length anymore. But idkkkkkkkk

I'm not really interested in shooting a 70-200 f4 again, however I did missing simply having a 70-200 f2.8, so I picked up a bargain 70-200 tamron VC for ~500. It's pretty much on par with the performance of the 70-200ii from canon, and the bargain price will have to hold me over, gotta save funds in case I get a real GAS attack, like the R3 :-P

got the zoom to shoot portraits of my kids, and my 135 stays around for adult portraits and low light.

which adapter are you using for that lens? I have thought about going that route, but i have to admit... i am completely un-educated on the use of adapters on our cameras. Does the auto focus still work on the tamron?

the focus hold and the AF/MF switch is really handy but i don't used those a lot so it's fine with me. but i will rent the Batis first if the focusing speed is really the same as the Sony.

Hey man. So I bring a lot of gear to the parks since I find them fun to photograph, but the rx1rii did the majority of the family photos and basically all of the video I shot on our last two trips. 35mm is a very good focal length for documenting and is basically the same FOV as your phone, but better optically and creatively. Also, realistically I can compose a photo on the rx1rii in less time than it would take me to boot up the camera app on my phone and snap a shot.

The downside to the rx1rii is the battery life. When out in the parks I would bring a really high capacity battery pack to charge phones, but also to charge my cameras while they're in the camera bag. I find that easier than charging a bunch of batteries every night.
