In hyperfocal manual focus mode, in order to get maximun DOF with an aperture as luminous as possible :

(in the present case : f3,2 for both pictures so the according shutter speed 1/40รจ s is fully compatible with handheld shooting with reasonable ISO
while focusing in the dark is no more an issue...despite i use a Canon powershot G1-X Mark II P&S )

I usually try and set my timing manually to somewhere between 8 - 10 seconds, but usually end up switching to Bulb as I have more control over pressing and releasing the shutter. So if something is not working or I want to 'kill' a shot and start over I can do it more quickly.
