I agree with Chet. E-Bay and PayPal necessarily side with buyers. I sold a camera on E-Bay. Buyer claimed it was defective. I had to refund his money. Until I got the camera back and could prove with photos that it was a different serial number than the one I sent to him. He dropped the case. I don't sell on E-Bay anymore.

I've been hearing similar eBay horror stories from other camera gear sellers. I have some gear to sell, but sure as hell don't want to risk it with eBay nowadays. Aside from POTN's For Sale subforum, where are the best places to sell camera gear, now?

If the buyer has not filed a, not as described e-bay complaint, then I wouldn't worry about it.

Generally speaking, unless you specified within your e-bay sale the buyer has 14 days to file a not as described claim.

Of course a buyer can file a not as described as received complaint beyond that window, but in that case e-bay will commonly side with the seller, unless the buyer can provide some strong support of the item that was sold not being as described.

eBay can be a good place to buy and sell camera gear, but with anything expensive you need to be wary of who you're dealing with regardless of the site you're selling on. Check their feedback score, and if they have no feedback that's a big red flag. Also only ship to Paypal confirmed addresses, and always require adult signature. Don't ship out of country, and always document your item carefully along with serial number. I usually take a picture of the item's serial number next to the shipping label and then one of the packed box ready to be sealed and shipped. Have not had any problems other than having to weed out some scammers along the way (for example someone tried to pay me an extra $150 for a lens to be shipped to Africa when the confirmed paypal address was in the US).

Selling on POTN is a little different - not everyone leaves feedback since there's no good system set up for it. Here I look at post count and the content of those posts - it's really easy to tell if someone is just trying to raise their post count on a forum. Personally I've never seen any scammers in my time here, but I would think the more expensive gear brings them out of the woodwork.

I once sold a lens to a guy in NY on Ebay. It was a P.O. address, so I had to send it via USPS. Couple of days later, USPS tracking showed that it was delivered. About a month later, the buyer opened a case saying he never received it and asked for a refund (strangely he didnt ask me about it during that period). Ebay sided with the buyer and gave me couple of days for proof of shipment. Luckily I still had the tracking no after a month, so Ebay closed the case. It turns out the buyer was in the habit of opening such cases and the whole thing was a scam. As someone said in the thread before, Ebay usually sides with the buyer and doesnt care.

yeah.. but it works the other way too... I bought an L bracket for my 1D IV..... the guy said he printed a label and shipped it... I emailed him repeatedly... he gave an excuse that he was out of town and ebay wasn't supposed to allow any bids on his stuff.

I had three weeks to get it for a wedding I was attending. 2 weeks later, supposedly shipped priority mail.. no tracking number, no package. eBay refunded my money and I ordered another one and got it before the the week was up.

I don't know what happened. I just needed an L bracket and RRS and Kirk stopped making theirs.

Rooeey, I've been watching this thread sine the start. Thanks for the update. I suspect that the buyer was just stirring the pot to see if he could get a partial refund voluntarily. If he had a legitimate claim I'm sure he would have made it.
