When I was shooting that aurora shot the other night I didn’t realise until I started driving home but I managed to get dog s#!t on both feet, my tripod leg and the front of my photo rucksack. I then got it on the back of my drivers seat when I placed the bag in the car. (Totally worth it though :-P). Managed to clean up everything but the bag still has a smell.

So - please shout out with your photo backpack/rucksack recommendations please. This is for my landscape kit and must be able to hold a tripod on the outside.

Thanks

Eddie, get one of the Fstop bags or the Mindshift. I have an Fstop bag and it carry my entire kit. It's comfy on the back and shoulders too.

6 shoots in 5 days. Wish me luck. I rented a Siggy 135 and will get a chance to put this thing to use!

Geez! Good luck. I'm about half way done editing the final 20+ images from Monday's architecture shoot of a commercial building. Getting tired of editing 3-4 hours each night.

Thanks Alfredo, I’ll check them out. I’ve actually got a F stop shoulder bag I really like and had looked and the loka pack years ago. I see the range has evolved since then.

If anyone has anymore lower budget ones they like would be interested to hear them too

I use a Clik Elite Contrejour for Landscape and hiking. It's my "Dadtography" bag as I can fit my camera gear in the camera compartment, while carrying jackets, water, snacks, towels, etc. for myself, my wife, and my girls in the hiking compartments. My main tripod is almost 36" collapsed, or about 89cm. It fits on the back of the Contrejour just fine at an angle. Meanwhile, I use the Clik Elite Escape when I'm going out by myself specifically for photography. It carries a fair bit more camera gear than the Contrejour but it doesn't carry my oversized tripod too well. Coming from Lowepro bags I find the Clik Elite bags to be quite light too. I have about a dozen bags, but I find that the two Clik bags are pretty much all I use.

Joel T has a new PS panel out today. It's a way to create intricate masks and refine the masks. I think he's using the power of the overlay blend mode with selection tools. I use that blend mode with the brush tool to refine my masks. I'll pick up the panel regardless to try it out. It should save me time when working on black and white long exposure architecture images.

My Mindshift Backlight 26L is my favorite, at 249 US its not super cheap but I love it, and it holds the TVC33 with ease, and that is a big set of sticks.

I know my preferences are fairly unique on this board, since I use a beltpack, but I've been moving more of my lenses onto my body, and use less with the belt. Belt still has the main camera and filters. On by body, I'll keep my lenses with my photo vest (it comfortably holds any of my landscape lenses). Tripod has a strap, so that goes crossbody as I walk. Setup and breakdown is always super fast.

Beforehand, I would keep lenses on my belt, hadnt even tried putting lenses in my vest, but since 2 of them are skinny variety, I can fit them in the vest easily. I use the Xume filter holders, so the holders are never off the lens, I essentially never fiddle with any sort of holders/adapter rings anymore, yet mount ND's/polarizers, even faster than before.

it took a LOT of GAS to get where I am today

I'm probably 4 outings in at this point and been happy with every outing, so maybe the light at the end of the tunnel is quickly arriving ;-)a

while the vest is not very high quality and does the job, I would like a better quality vest. I even drive with all my lenses on my body!

So I dont look like a total nerd, I have a big red jacket that I typically wear, especially at the beach. In the city, I may want to be more low key and wear a black jacket.

Finally found a good review on the 16-35GM to see how it compares to other similar zooms. Just wish he had a comparison with the Batis 18mm but from what I can tell, they are very close IQ wise. I would rate the Batis 18 a bit better on distortion performance but I want to take some test shots to see the difference. I believe I have a good centered copy of the GM. Even at 35mm, things are looking good.

Per Roger Cicala:

"Conclusion

The Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 GM lens is an excellent optic at 16mm and 24mm. If you want to shoot wide at f/2.8 on an FE mount camera it’s probably the optic of choice. The 16-35 ZA f/4 is a good lens and a lot cheaper if you don’t need f/2.8, but the GM is just better optically. It’s not better or worse than the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L Mk III, it’s different, and some people will certainly like it’s look better.

But if you plan on using it at 35mm, which I generally don’t recommend for wide zooms if you have alternatives, well, you’re probably going to go through several copies before you find the one you want. Personally, I think it’s a really good 16-24mm f/2.8 zoom that can be used at 35mm if you have to."

I think I am going to stick with what I have, and focus on acquiring the 70-200 and a TSE or two...I really like my B18 and B25 and don't want to get rid of them...

16-35 certainly looks like a good lens. I've been beating my head against the wall trying to figure out what to do about the UWA side of things, but a part of me of saying sell the Loxia 21 and grab the GM to cover everything from 16-24mm. I liked the 12-24, but 12mm is such a limited focal length for me. The times I did shoot at that focal length, I screwed up the framing so much that I had to crop back to around to probably 18mm FOV in post to get a decent framing lol.

Good plan Travis. I'm going to evaluate my options after some additional testing. I have some time before the return period is up. I will say it was really nice having a zoom for this last project. It just made things easier without having to change lenses too often. Could I have gotten by just with the Batis 18 for the interior shots? Yes possibly but it was good to have 16mm too and 24mm. A CV15 or Laowa 15mm would be a good addition if I keep the prime. I also need to a TSE lens too.
