These were 2 of 6 Crossbills in a pine tree which came down for a drink. They were all different colours. They were very aware I was watching them.
There characteristics are very similar to that of small parrots. They were breaking off bits of pine cone with their very strong bills and holding the piece with one foot while they nibbled at it.

Thanks sidknee, these 2 photo's were taken at Haddon Hill in Somerset (link below explains exact location). They are the common crossbill and I often see them there. I often go there because I hope to get the much much rarer 2-barred crossbill which I have got photo's off but only what I call record shots.

A closer location to you would be Staple-Hill, near Taunton. I often see them here. However, please note at both locations they are usually high up in the canopy and difficult to photograph but will on occasion come down to a puddle to drink. So a good tip is look for puddles near pine tree's.
