Depends what Island you will be on and what you want to shoot. I just returned from 2 week on Kauai, it was my 4th visit in the last 10 years. Personally I would bring the 16-35 24-70 & 70-200 and probably not use the 24-70 the entire trip but would hate to leave it home.

So we booked next year (in August) a week on Maui (never been) and another week on Kauai (been there before).

But I'm looking for suggestions if anyone knows some good spots on Maui to shoot. We'll be in Hana and Kihei.

I plan on sunrise from the top of the mountain on Maui for sure. Anything else or place I should be sure to hit?

For Kauai, here's where I shot last time:

Queens Bath
Poipu
Secret Beach
Ke'e Beach
Lumahai Beach
Hanalei Beach
Anini Beach
Anahola Beach

I missed Kilauea due to renovations.

I do not see any West side beaches from Kauai, spend a day on that side, drive out to Polihali (Im sure I spelled that wrong) but before that drive up the canyon, it is so worth it. Also the Tropical Botanical Gardens out near Poipu are amazing.

I'm not sure what the surfing scene is like around all the islands but I know those waves start getting pretty bad this time of year. They closed a couple beaches on the North Shore when we were there during the November/December months due to 30' waves. Some surfers probably love those but I didn't see anyone out there.

In Oahu, when the surf is 30' plus some of the surf spots on the North Shore turn to mush. But thats when spots like Waimea Bay gets good.

Wondering if anyone has some insight?
I leave Tuesday for Hawaii and wondering which lenses to bring.
I planned on brining my 16-35mm f/4, 35mm f/2, 24-70mm f/4
I am leaving at home my 50mm f/1.8 , Sigma 85mm art , and my 70-200 f/4

So my question is which lenses do you think would be best or just bring what I planned on ? Do you think I need my tele?

Thanks

I went to Hawaii last March, with a bunch of lenses. On a crop camera, my two most used lenses were 18-135 STM, and 70-300L

In Maui, I like the sunset from Haleakala too. Big Beach in Makena, Secret Beach in Makena, and Iao Needle. Hookipa Beach Park in Paia for honu (turtle) shots.

I think I counted like 32 when I was there. I know that its hard to believe until you actually see it yourself. Here' another spot on the westside of Maui.

bring what you can but take what you only need with you for the time being. avoid leaving gears in the car. it really depends what you are hoping to take pictures of as paloika brought up.

enjoy your trip :)

i used mostly wide-medium on my previous trip. 24-70 2.8, 50 1.8, 35 1.4 i did not have a telephoto lens then and didnt feel like I needed it. another time I brought it but didnt really use it. forced myself to use it once just because i brought it :P with that said, I would bring the 70-200 still. just in case heh

I took all my pictures with my 24-70mm lens. I brought a long lens but never used it. I mainly need it for whales when I visit Maui.

Life is hard...but I just take it one photograph at a time.
