Hi!

I am shopping for the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS Lens on ebay and I found the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS II and the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS STM. I do not see the STM on any of the lenses IS II or IS STM some titles say STM and some don't? Am I missing something? And is there a large difference between the IS II and the IS STM?

Thank You

Jeff

The IS STM is the one you're looking for, the IS II is junk - there is a big difference, make sure it says STM as there's no STM version that doesn't have IS.

That being said I recently picked up a Canon 70-300mm IS II USM and that lens is way better than the 55-250, not only is the IQ better but the Nano USM focuses MUCH faster than STM. Something else to keep an eye out for on ebay.

Google photos of the lens you want. Compare to E-bay images. Ask the seller to clarify.

I've owned the 55-250 II. Slow AF and mediocre IQ. The 55-250 STM has a good reputation. I just ordered a 70-300 II USM, also. The IQ seems to be worth the few extra bucks. It is a nano-USM focusing lens, just like the 18-135 USM, which has killer-fast-dead-accurate AF. I already own the 18-135 nano-USM. I have a closet full of L-glass, and I consider the 18-135 USM to be money well spent.

I wouldn’t say the I or II are junk but the STM is a big improvement.

this...i don't think i've seen anyone refer to them as junk or mediocre before this thread...when they first came out people were all about them because of the cheap price...they're still a great bang for the buck

canon is selling the STM refurbished for $203 with a 1 year warranty

The STM is the latest 55-250 lens version. It's the one you want, if you want a 55-250. It's sharp wide open, good at everything and inexpensive.

Canon Refurb has them, with a warranty, for $200:

Very best,
