Soooooo has anyone in here that came from shooting canon had thoughts about going back? Idk what has gotten into me lately, but i can't stop thinking about selling my sony gear and going back to a 5d3 and L glass. I'm not sure if it is the cost of quality native lenses that is bothering me all the sudden or what.

Only thing I miss on Canon is the 24-70 2.8 II and the slightly better skin tone colors on Caucasians. Besides that I'm 100% Sony. After my full switch do I think it was worth the $11,000 I spent though? I'm not sure. That's a lot of money.

The thing that makes the switch to Sony worth it to me is the size of my gear bag. Consider these unique lenses:

CV 12mm: very small, nothing like it for Canon.

Loxia 21mm: optically as excellent as the best Canon-mount lens in 20ish mm focal range, but small/portable. Sigma 20mm Art is incredible, but the f1.4 aperture makes it huge and heavy.

Loxia 35mm: very small with stunningly great color and good sharpness stopped down. I would rather have my Loxia for landscapes than any 35mm f2 Canon-mount option.

FE 55mm: small and very light. The best Canon-mount 50ish mm lenses (Sigma, Otus) are too heavy, while Canon 50mm 1.8 isn’t nearly as good.

Batis 135mm: Stunningly sharp, but lightweight due to f2.8 aperture. Nothing like it for Canon.

Other Sony-mount lenses should be noted as uniquely high-performing yet lightweight, such as the Batis 18, 25, FE 12-24, FE 16-35 GM, CV 10mm and 15mm, etc.

There are loads of optically amazing Canon-mount lenses available for the Canon platform, but there isn’t one I’d prefer to own over my Sony-mount lenses because size matters (to me) and at comparable sizes the Sony-mount lenses are better. I’ve owned the Sigma 20 & 35 Art, Canon35L II, Zeiss Otus 55, and Zeiss Apo Sonnar 135: they are all awesome...and huge.

Note: I decided not to comment on my FE 35mm 1.4 or Batis 85mm 1.8 because I don’t view them as being unique to the Sony platform the way my other lenses are.

Anecdotally, those who have either switched back to Canon or bought a Canon body to see if they want to go back end up sticking with Sony.

No way most especially because of the EVF, Eye Focus, dynamic range and the size. Remember how the Canon keeps beeping for focus confirmation and when you get to your computer, a lot of them are out of focus? Not to mention the front and back focus issue.

Colors can always be enhance in post so i don't miss canon colors.

IBIS, form factor - form factor - form factor, eye af, focus coverage, accuracy, zooming/peaking while in EVF, luscious files, digital back = wild lens selection and options = my playground

I did shoot with a DSLR a month ago, and it was shocking to go back. Dont want to do that again :-P

I do get nostalgia with older behavior, like the 28-75 and 70-200 f2.8, I've owned both in the past, and always thought they were terrific values, so I got them again. They work better than I remember..... however, I usually dont get nostalgic about camera bodies. Like shooting with the vintage 5Dc..... get me out of this hellhole now :-P

Yea, i think my problem is a canon 70-200 2.8L IS is only like 1,000$ US on the higher end right now. If i want to go sony and get the 2.8 it is over double that, or you settle for the f4 version and still pay more than the L glass. If i want to run the L lens, then i need to adapt it and it is another cost factored in. I really have been happy with my a7ii, but i guess i am just not wowed by it anymore.

When I made the jump to Sony, I had what I considered a pretty functional kit: 6D, 60D, 17-40L, 50A, 135L, 200 2.8 Lii and a 580exii with cheap wireless triggers. I was happy with my IQ, my lenses and the performance of my gear.

Sony e-mount appealed to me because my kids were both toddlers and the gear was getting in the way when we would go out. It was much smaller, and that meant something to me. Of course, I would look through the forum and marvel at the detail in everyone's work and I knew I was also getting an IQ upgrade out of the deal. The DXO numbers may not be a tell-all, but they didn't lie about how good the sensors were.

I went through many stages with e-mount, and ultimately the lenses did price me out. I really miss the FE 55 and how small my footprint was using it with the a6000 and a7r. There isn't a day that goes by where I don't eye grey market a7rii's going for $1900 on eBay, in spite of being happy with my current A-mount setup (for the most part). The kids have aged a few years and it doesn't hurt as bad when I bang them with a 5-pound body/lens combo. (JK--kinda)

The key question I ask myself: How useful is my kit to ME right now? I can honestly answer that I don't need anything for what I shoot, although I always look to improve my bag at the right price.

Going back to Canon is like going back to the ex that you know will fulfill immediate needs to a certain point, but are forced to overlook obvious shortcomings.

Sticking with Sony--whatever mount you choose--is staying in a relationship that just keeps getting better and better. In my case, I use what many have called a "dead" mount. My high-tech body is force-fed two screwdrive lenses and a 2xTC that slows down the 200 prime something fierce. I can't use all the excellent new focus features my body offers with my two longer lenses, so one could say I'm settling. But in settling I also get excellent EVF, eye AF and stabilized glass no matter what I slap on to go with a sensor Canon cannot give me. I took a usable hand-held shot with a 135mm lens at a half-second SS a few days back. Canon can't give me that luxury.

We all have our crosses to bare, and the constant improvement of gear insures we will always seek to pack a better bag. Along with liking the compactness of e-mount, I also know that lenses like the Nikon 105 1.4 and the Canikon 200 f2 will always be forbidden fruit to me. It just isn't going to happen on a-mount, barring a major surprise. Is it tempting to, say, buy a cheap D610 and a used 105 1.4 and build a Nikon kit around it? Sure! Get another 6D ($900 new!) and a used fast 200? To me that's a drool-worthy proposition, but I sacrifice a ton of utility.

Best of luck in finding your way through the gear maze of late 2017. There aren't many bad choices out there, just different ones that will take you to some different places.

I think if I went back to a DSLR, I would move over to the Nikon system now. I feel Canon are falling a bit behind now, but the lenses are the thing keeping them in the game.

Very happy with my move to Sony, I just can't afford the lenses I would like, and reading these pages just makes it worse :)

The size of the 2.8 is appealing however I have a thing for fast primes :)

Yes. Same here. I mainly shoot 85/1.8 & 40/1.4 (MF) but want/need AF more now so the 35/2.8 has been getting much more use as a stop-gap....... I don't want the Distagon 35/1.4!!

well... the a9r and sigma FE lens coming out early 2018 is just a rumor that started out by me :P

im not sure when they will be out hehe.

As we all know, Sigma is now working on the new FE lenses for Sony Full-Frame Mirrorless cameras. However, according to the latest rumors from SR5, the launch of the first lens got delayed from end 2017 to very early 2018

Oh for sure I love Sony more, and now that I've switched I would not go back. All I was saying was, had I known the total cost of a full system switch (I don't believe in adapters), I don't know if I would have made the jump when I did. I did get around $6,000 for my Canon gear though, and I had been saving up for the switch for a long time, so it was fine.

But had I known about the A7RIII specs I probably would have waited and saved the $1300 over the a9. But overall I do think the a9 is a better camera, and I could not be happier with it, but in a lot of cases it's more than I need. I think the a7RIII would have been more than enough for what I do.

What I want from Sigma is that 14mm 1.8 ...... then I probably would get that for astro and let go of the cv10 and lox 21 for the the 12-24 Sony f4

Switching is expensive. I wouldn't do it again unless Sony's products suddenly become significantly less competitive. At the time I switched to Sony, that's the way I felt about Canon. Sony still has some maturing to do in certain areas, but looking at the big picture, Sony is the best fit for me. There isn't anything compelling being done by the other guys to make the switching cost worthwhile.

There' are reasons why I still have my 1Dx. The ergos on the Sony are atrocious. I can't stand using the Sony for any sort of fast moving event. The skin tones, and colors overall are still better with the Canon imo, and using a decent on camera flash with the A7 is beyond awkward. A 1Dx with 24-70 2.8 and 600exrt may be big, but it's well balanced, responsive, and very easy to use. My Sony is used almost exclusively on a tripod.

Meanwhile, I simply shoot my Sony with adapted Canon glass, solves that problem. ;)
