Handheld 8 exposure pano of SW Portland waterfront... the 50-140 is a pretty amazing lens.

Canon user here ... I've read most of this thread and the X-T2 looks like a terrific camera. The kit 18-55mm lens looks like quite the treasure, best of the APS-C standard zoom lenses.

But most of my shooting is birds and bugs - subjects far away and very close. And unfortunately it seems those genres are not the forte of the X-T2. Most of the shots in the thread are people pics, landscapes, and shots around the home or town. I need 400mm for birds. The Fuji 100-400mm is not that strong at the long end according to reviews. I'm spoiled by the Canon 100-400mmII! So I'm disappointed that the long end niche has not been adequately filled by Fuji.

On the macro side, the Fuji 60mm macro has too short a working distance for bug photography. I might be able to use the Samyang 100mm, so there could be a macro solution. But I don't see anybody shooting at 1:1 with the X-T2, so this will have to be a question mark for now.

I'm keen to reduce the weight of the gear I carry and enjoy the best normal zoom for crops, but I might have to wait a bit longer for the right specialty lenses to appear.

Archibald, Fuji now have the 80mm f/2.8 macro if that is long enough.

Right, thanks. It seems to be a very sharp lens. The working distance (front of lens to subject) seems to be unknown, but is probably around 5" or 130 mm at the closest focusing distance. That is my guess since the 100mm macros have working distances of about 6" or 150mm. I don't know if the shorter macro will be OK for skittish critters. One would just have to try it, I guess.

According to the Fuji website (external link) it focuses from 25cm (9 3/4 inches)

The focus distance is commonly cited for lenses. That is fine for normal shooting distances. But for macro lenses we need the working distance. If we knew the distance from the sensor to the front of the lens, we could subtract that from the 25 cm to get the working distance.

Let's see... the lens is 130 mm long. The camera's flange distance is 17.7 mm. 250-130-17.7 = 102 mm, only 4 inches. :-(

Since my issues are with two Fuji lenses, the macro and long tele zoom, I could just use my existing excellent Canon lenses on the X-T2. But I don't see much benefit to that, and there could be some serious disadvantages. I think I would give up AF, would I not?

For me to jump, I would prefer Fuji solutions to both the long end and the close end. I could devise hybrid solutions, but that gets complicated and I like to keep things as simple as possible.

And BTW, I rely heavily on AF for macro work. My method is to find the subject in the viewfinder when at some distance, then move in with back-button focus on servo, and then when the framing is right, optionally switch to MF just by releasing the back button.

As they say, there is nothing new under the sun. I'm not the first to be examining this. If there were good Fuji solutions to birding and to macro, folks would be using them and posting the great results.

Ah, so on the macro end if you need a longer lens, essentially, you can use either the 1.4 or 2.0 teleconverters with the XF80 macro. Both should keep full WR and functionally of the lens but it might get a little dark if you usually shoot macro with lens wide open and not down to f/8 or so. With he 2x converter you get 1.27 so should give a bit more room to back away from the subject.

I might have posted the table before but here is the link (external link) to Fujifilm's macro data.

Thanks! Useful info. And the working distances are shown: 98 mm for the 80mm macro. The working distance gets shorter with the extension tubes (as expected), but would increase with teleconverters. (The MCEX-11 and -16 are actually extension tubes.)

Here's an example of Fujifilm 100-400 at 400mm with the 1.4x converter. I was reasonably happy with this.
