With this theme, living in Amsterdam, I couldn't NOT go to the Red Light District. I waited until the weekend, thinking it would be the busiest days of the week and that would be cool. And then winter arrived and we had heavy snow fall. This morning we had a window in the snowstorm and I went out. I was back around noon and just in time as it had started to snow again. Of course, on a Monday morning the red windows were empty and there's not a lot of people, but that can't be helped. I took shots that I can't post in this thread. But here are two that I can share.

This one is taken in the Trompettersteeg, which is at the very heart of the Red Light District. It must be the narrowest street in the world. You can pass by yourself, but can't extend your arms. Not even up to the elbows. It's pretty claustrophobic. A few ladies were actually at work. They looked nice too. But I didn't take pics of them as they really don't like that. If you do, you can get in a lot of trouble here.

Love the alley way shot.
I don't think people in the USA can even imagine what the Red Light District is like in Amsterdam.
It's sort of like a theme park. Streets are clean. The girls a well dressed. Everything is quite out in the open.
I really enjoyed the area, and it changed my mind about how things could be...

Thanks, Jo.
Prostitution is legal here and regulated, as long as it is consensual and between adults.

Here's another shot, with still some snow left from yesterday's storm. It's a look down the Oudezijds Achterburgwal, the canal that is more or less the centre of the Red Light District. Most of the side alleys have red windows. But as you can see there are quite a few on the canal itself. The girls on the left of the pic made me laugh though. They're in front of red windows (in Dutch "peeskamers") and the sign says "rooms for rent". I do hope they're not tourists looking for a cheap place, because then they'd be in for a big surprise! :p

LOL. There is actually a club called Moulin Rouge somewhere in the area. Other than that our mills are usually not red. :-P

It was and still is around freezing point. Cold but not too cold. It was actually nice to be outside. It started snowing again yesterday afternoon, just after I got home and it turned into a fierce snow storm that lasted well into the night. I just woke up to a white world. However, slightly higher temps are expected today and the coming days, rain too, so the snow should disappear quickly.

That cup looks huge! It sends chills down my spine. With the temperatures we're having I wouldn't mind a hot chocolate that size now! :-P

Speaking of drinks, alcohol can be a guilty pleasure too, right?

Another guilty pleasure is smoking a joint. That's what our coffee shops are famous for as it's the place to buy and smoke soft drugs. Soft drugs are not really legal in the Netherlands but are tolerated, as long as you only possess a small amount for personal use. Growing the stuff is not tolerated. And I wouldn't go sell it on the streets either.

One last entry. I shot this yesterday around 4 p.m. I didn't think I could share it here but then I realised shooting cyclists in dire conditions really is a guilty pleasure of mine. Which in itself is strange as I don't like candids. But I've been doing it for years. Often from my living room window, but if the weather is exciting enough, I'll go down and shoot at street level. As you can see I didn't exaggerate when I said "snowstorm"! Only 4 p.m. but already very dark, despite the snow.
