Is the black curved part something like a rubber seal?

The item does not have a rubber seal.

Christmas tree decoration?

(bauble?)

Swing and a miss. I'm afraid not.

Using a different display it doesn't look black anymore.
It still looks like a bauble.
I'd use it as a bauble.

Is the whole thing smaller than a man's fist?

You're free to decorate your tree as you choose. While there are some unusually shaped baubles out there, this particular item is not equipped (currently) with a small looped thread for hanging and is, as such, unsuitable for such purposes.

It has different dimensions to a man's fist. In two of the three it is quite clearly smaller. In the third it's a more open contest. Volume would be smaller.

It serves a function which allows for the undertaking of a specific task. In that sense it is a tool, implement or aparatus. But it is not a tool one would expect to find in a socket set. (Depending on the workshop, and its owner, one might be found in a workshop.)

Can we interpret this as something cylindrical with a long dimension of the order 4-5 inches?

When used to undertake said specific task, does the item have to contain something specific?

You can interpret it thusly. I wouldn't think purely cylindrical though.

It does, correct.

...

Sadly, it is (gone) my bed time. I shall attend your queries in the morning.

The contents are sometimes partially ingested but rarely eaten.

That would depend entirely upon the artist, but certainly one or two throughout history.

You're both warm, but in different ways.

I wouldn't say the two were similiar, no.

You went there. The item photographed was not intended by its manufacturers (I am daring to speak on their behalf) to do so.

With that guess, you're almost smoking.
