I had the 70D and now have the 80D. The LV/Video servo focus is HUGELY improved on the 80D. I recently bought the 18-135 USM and 70-300 II USM (both nano-USM). I haven't tried it yet, but I think I could track field sports with either of those lenses on the 80D in video mode. Both are incredibly fast and responsive. OK, accurate, too!

I was very impressed with the 80D and almost bought it. That sensor has a more silky look to it than my 7D2 has. Not saying the 7D2 is bad. I'm expecting at least as good if not better with the 7D3. The 80D also came out with an newer mechanical design to reduce mirror slap that I expect the 7D3 to have as well.

Interesting! I almost bought the 7D2 for 10 fps. Since I wanted smaller/lighter than my 1D4, I ended up with the 80D. I must admit that 7 FPS has not yet let me down. But 10 sounds way cooler when I am impressing the other grandparents at my grandson's games! :)

I use my 5D4 more these days and I don't find 7 FPS that bad but I'd take a few more. Less files to deal with later. I always come home with decent BIF shots. If I were doing this professionally that would be a different story.

The 70D has a spring system and the 80D has a motor driven mirror assembly.

This design looks different than the 7D2. I'm not sure if it a newer and better overall design or just an upgrade to the 70D. Scroll down a bit to see it.

So, has anybody tried using face detection with a wide open lens and got good results?

Tim1970, first off, apologies for taking two days to get this done. My wife... blah, blah, blah (it is ALWAYS her fault :) ).

OFFICIAL DISCLAIMER!
I do not shoot people wide open. I think razor thin DOF for portraiture is way wrong. I NEVER, EVER, EVER! posted any photos of my wife with no makeup and her hair not done! GOT IT!

Anyway, I used my 80D and 85 1.8 wide open and 50 STM wide open. Settings: Face detect LV, AI-SERVO, f/1.8, 1/250, ISO 200, bounced flash, JPG STD, focus distance was 6-8'. I was surprised to see how quickly AF responded to little movements. I was surprised to see the AF change the number/placement of little squares as her hand/phone went into an out of the AF area. The camera was very good at NOT picking up the fingers/phone. It kept the AF on the eyes, and whatever else it deemed 'face'. The crops clearly show that the Face Detect AF does NOT focus on the end of the nose, but seems to go specifically for the eyes. At f/1.8, on this angle, both were NEVER going to be in focus. I think LV Face Detect on the 80D does what you'd want it to do. I am not a LV shooter, so weigh my opinion carefully. It may be worthless.

Oops! Forgot to mention that these are 100% crops. I hope you all knew that already.
