Really like the second one. In part because the face in the first is a little soft (focus appears to be on the hands/mug) but also because, often, less is more. Blocking the lower face increases the focus on the eyes and she has a great eye-smile.

Working in Galway today, just after a bad storm flooded the city. Managed to get the shoot done just before the rain started up again but got soaked after the shoot when I went for a walk around the harbour before going for lunch. I got so wet I had to go buy a change of clothes.

Check out that rain...

And the lighthouse at the end of the pier a little later, after we warmed up from the freezing cold wind in the local cafe, love the colour in the sky in the one.

always used single point AF for street shooting..

going to try Zone AF for closeups ..'
i got one out of 9 in focus, but i think i had it set too close for the lens i had one(23mm) ..

did a quick trial run during a trip to the market

also at 2.8 at 23 .. is kind of too shallow for street .. or atleast for street and someone new at zone AF, i'm sure out doors at f5.6 or above i would have had a higher hit ratio

we've been in the single digits temp lately , supposed to get into the high 30s in a day or two .. hoping to give it a try in more typical situations

i like to try and get real up close .. i'd prefer a 28mm (ff equiv) .. might have to get the 18mm

Close range to subject and full depth of field (or at least very close) can certainly be done. One thing I love about a solid manual focus system (lens & body creating that) is the ability to set focus via zone or distance, and hyperfocal the depth of field for your intended ranges. With something like an 18mm or 23mm, you can do that, setting focus at 2 meter and using depth of field to do the rest. You don't need infinity in focus. Just 2 meter to say, 10 meters perhaps, whatever you think, in focus.

With 23mm, focus set to 2 meters (6 feet approx), at F16, you have focus from about 3 feet to infinity. F16 sounds nuts (and might be especially in lower light), but look at the depth of field. You are free to simply compose and capture, and never worry about focus. At F11, same numbers, you get a little over 3 feet to 27 feet in focus. So in the street, you could totally get away with F8 or F11, focused some where between 1 and 2 meters probably and always have your subject in focus basically.

With 18mm, focus set to 2 meters (6 feet approx), at F8, you're in focus from 3 feet to 57 feet. Totally doable in the street. Just compose, and expose. Done. F5.6 at 18mm with focus set at 2 meters will get you almost 4 feet to 16 feet in focus too, and that can totally be done in lower light with higher ISO and room to spare on the shutter with the wider angle.

I do it with 12mm all the time, where it's even easier (F5.6 means everything in focus, focus set to 2 meters, from 2.5 feet to infinity will all be in focus) when I'm out and about and focus is never missed. Love wider angle and hyperfocal.

Very best,

My son, waiting for his mom and little sister to finish shopping. I told him to get used to it. :D

I never tried the "fim grain" option when converting from RAW in camera, so I tried it here.
