What's your favorite lens bought in 2017? What lens did you sell that you miss the most?

St. Nick delivered a 100-400 L IS Mark II. Was thinking of trading in my old 100-400 L IS version 1. However for now I am going to keep it as a back if the new one needs service or if a friend would like to borrow.

My favorite purchase in 2017 was the EF 24-105 L II. In terms of sharpness and distortion, it's not much different than the v1. However the AF, IS, and build quality are all much better. And the photos have better color and contrast probably due to the modern lens coatings. I know this lens has been panned by many people. But the more I use it, the more I appreciate its improvements over the v1.

I sold my 100L macro about 18 months ago. I missed it. I replaced it last year when Canon Refurbished had it on sale for $611. It's nice to have it back in the bag even though I don't use it all that much.

My wife's favorite purchase was replacing her EF-S 55-250 STM with the EF 70-300 II. She feels that the 70-300 is an improvement in every way over the 55-250.

Image editing ok; C&C always welcome.

Woo-hoo! :-) I get to post to this thread. The 100-400 mk2 was an early Xmas gift from me to me. Only the one purchase so I guess that makes it my favourite. First lens purchase in years. Not sure if it will replace my 70-300L as my go to walk about lens. Still waiting for the Canon 200-600 unicorn.

I have rented the 24-105 i , but went ahead and got the 24-105 ii when I bought my 6d ii. I think it focuses faster, too. But I didn't notice a huge difference.

As for the 70-300 ii vs the 55-250 stm, it is better in every way except size. But better optics are usually bigger because physics.

Happy new year!

My favorite 2017 lens purchase was the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS ii which is a wonderful lens. It is heavy (around the weight of the 70-200mm f/2.8L (series) lens but, the IS is so great that it is very hand holdable...

Favorite- Fujifilm 50-140

Regret- 35 f2 IS. But I have no body to put it on anymore so it wouldn’t do me any good.

Favorite was 24-105 F4L V1. Works fantastic on the 5D IV and priced nicely used because of the V2 coming out.
Biggest miss is the 70-200 F4L non IS. Sold to buy Tamron 70-200 2.8 non VC <- which does not behave very nice on the 5D IV (slowish AF and likes to hunt) But does make good pics when it gets it right.

I'd sold everything in 2016 due to low usage, added a 6D, 50 1.2 and 16-35 f4 IS in hopes of getting back into it in 2017. Although I still haven't been out as much as I'd like, I really enjoy the 16-35 f4 IS/6D combo. Hope to add the 100-400 II in 2018.

You can do a lot with just those 3.

Didn't sell anything, can't let them go :p I'll give my old set to family members instead of selling them, here people don't pay what the second hand equipment is worth anyway.

Bought the last 2 lenses and completed my dream set last year. Loving all of them but if end of 2016 counts 35mm f/1.4 II may not be the most expensive one but the most used and loved lens in my bag for sure :-)

2017 was a busy and surprising year.

The most significant addition - after searching for more than a year - was the Canon EF 600mm f4L IS USM Mk II. As I live on the bank of a river, this is a long anticipated and welcomed addition.

I also began shooting, developing and scanning film (35mm & 120 so far) in 2017. This began innocently enough with the receipt of an unanticipated gift of a Canon AE-1 Program with a few FD mount lenses. Then I redesigned & remodeled a utility room for processing, added a legendary M3 w/'cron 50/2 DR and a Hassy 503CX kit, and the Canon EOS-1N - to use my EF lenses.

Next followed a return to the dark side where I snagged a Nikon FE/MD12 and F100/MB15, and - for nostalgia - a Nikkormat EL. Then I decided in a moment of weakness to begin collecting copies of the Nikon professional film series - thus an F Photomic FTn apollo, an F2AS, an F3HP & an F4S - with a few more to follow. And, just because, a digital Df.

At year's end, I started adding manual focus lenses that seem to be fading from today's market:
3 Zeiss "classics" ZF.2 mounts: 35/2, 85/1.4 & 135/2, and
3 Voigtländer SL IIs: 20/3.5, 40/2 and 58/1.4.
No hardships in this group - and they adapt well to my Canon and Fuji bodies.

It was a busy year.

My favorite lens for 2017 is the Canon 400mm DO II, very impressed with this lens. I miss the 300mm 2.8 vII it was excellent but I rarely used it at 300mm so I sold it to help fund the Canon 200-400mm which I enjoy using very much also.

I replaced my EF-s 55-250 stm with the 70-300 IS USM II. I like the 70-300 very much. More compact than my 100-400 and I like the shorter range in some situations better than my 100-400 i. I guess I should eventually replace the 100-400 with a 150-600, but not this year.

Not last year, but the last lens I got was the Sigma 150-600 C. Before that I used to rent the 100-400L I for some airshows. I really think the Sigma is an improvement in image quality at 600mm over the 100-400 at 400mm.

Being disabled I don't have a lot of money for kit, and with the 150-600 I am pretty much set up for my main photographic interest now. So I don't churn kit over all the time. My main general purpose normal zoom is a Sigma 20-40 ƒ/2.8 EX DG, which I've used since 2005. I had hoped that Sigma would have replaced the 50-150 ƒ/2.8 EX OS with a Sport version, If they had that would probably have been my 2017 lens purchase.

The only lens I bought in 2017 was the 16-35F4IS. I got it for a trip to Italy and it worked out well.

This was one of my favorite images from the trip.

As to what lens I miss. A while back I sold my 70-300L and I wish I would have kept it, I thought the 100-400II would replace it but for travel I'd love to have had the 70-300L. I thought it would be hard to justify having both but I can see having both and it's one I may eventually re-buy.
