Hmm.... still can't get these kind of birds in focus It seems like it is not enough contrast for the 80D's AF system.
I took about 20 shot each and 99% are like the picture below. The bird on the right there I focused on the water/grass that has more contrast and it came out pretty good .
While focus works and gives sharp result on other things like buildings and other conrasty objects It's not a lensproblem.
Never had this problem with my 6D (too bad It got damaged).

It's possible that your lens/camera combination has a front or back focusing issue. If it is, you can use the DOT TUNE method, or others, to adjust that focus point and save it in your camera.
