Hey guys,

So I was reading a recent fall/winter 2017/18 publication and I noticed a field contributor's photo with the metadata. It clearly says Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 DO IS USM.

So my first thought was it's a typo. Maybe they meant a 70-300 DO. Well that lens is a variable aperture lens and it stated f2.8 IS. I also took note that the said photo was shot on a older Rebel XTi.

I've done a bit of digging online and I found the publication of a patent for this lens back in May 2016.

Could we assume it's a field testing of this lens?

Or ....

I dunno. Anyone have any insight?

I'd be excited to see such a lens.

My opinion is that Canon won't come out with a 70-200mm DO lens. The current 70-200mm lenses are very popular, so there's less demand for what DO was marketed for (especially in the 70-200mm range: can see maybe longer FLs). DO was marketed as a lens that can be smaller and lighter by having smaller and fewer lens elements that have less diffractive properties. Other brands didn't seem to want to compete with the DO lenses that did come out. They have more expensive and bigger 70-200mm designs now. So DO being a lighter cheaper L lens just doesn't fit in the 70-200mm range (where Canon has very good prices and performance with 70-200mm f4 to 70-200mm f2.8 II IS).

Very good point.

But why the patent and the publication's photo with that image info? It's actually found on two different photos in the magazine.

It's always fun to speculate and have rumors:-) I remember there being a rumor that Canon would be using foveon type sensors by now, because they started having a patent with them a few years ago. Not all patents come to fruition (especially large companies like Canon). I could be wrong, but again, just my opinion that Canon's not looking to do it with the 70-200mm range since there isn't as much a market. I would think that if they did want to keep introducing DO lenses, it would be with longer FLs.

.
Big corporations file for patents for hundreds of things that they never intend to make. . It is good business when the corporation is in a competitive industry.

.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

I t will pass many years before they replace Canon EF 70-200 f2.8 L IS II. This is bread and butter for portrait work!

Here's a report of the iii. It may be in field testing.
I still think a DO version is upon us.
