So the new model is more performing, better af, faster and more precise, better tropicalization, better weight balance dimensions, stabilizer and 77mm filters.
Many photographers say that despite all these improvements, the 85mm 1.2 II is still hibeable for its performance, returns images with a unique dream effect.
My doubt is whether it is better to have the new technology to the detriment of the dream effect.

It is true that you do get a unique look from this lens. However, if you were to take 10 images shot with the 1.2 and 10 different images shot with the 1.4, it would be very difficult to pick out which shots belong to which lens. If you take the exact same image shot with each lens and compare them side by side, then you probably would be able to pick out the 1.2 image, but only after close examination. So, to me, in real world usage the benefits of the 1.4 far outweigh the "unique look" of the 1.2

This is something that I would really like to see tested out. Until someone who has access to both lenses is able to take a range of carefully selected representative side-by-side test shots with each lens set to maximum aperture, I think the special importance of the 'magic' or it's practical insignificance are no more than blind assertions ... whichever side of the argument they come from.

Does anyone have any problems with this lens not catching autofocus? It will hunt and struggle and then never catch focus. I usually have to turn off my camera and when I turn it on again it usually works.

I'm updating my firmware on my 5Ds R, but I have no idea if it's related to that. Anyone else have similar issues?

Decided to try this lens at basketball tonight. While it didn't focus as fast as my 70-200, I was still very impressed by the keeper rate, especially considering I was shooting at 1.4.

No such issues with the 5D3 body so far. What is the lighting condition and your camera settings when this happens?

I stand by my original statement, that in a blind test, I don't think you could consistently pick out which lens was used.

I have the same lens and I'm a bit undecided about it. Is it mostly static portraits that you shoot?

I was a second shooter at a wedding last weekend and was using the Sigma. I noticed in single shot it has no issue nailing focus, although in continuous it wasn't as accurate. If you shoot in continuous a lot then this lens may be the better option.

May I ask are you using the f/1,4L IS?

Oh shoot I saw 85mm and usm and assumed and didn’t pay attention to the f stop

I rented this lens for a weekend. OMG, love from first shot. The lens is brilliant. I can tell you it is the best L lens I’ve ever used and my beloved 85L 1.2 ii is now for sale. I am a hybrod photo/video shooter and the new 85 is just magical - IS is incredible even for panning and quiet! and DPAF servo tracking (5div) is perfect. Honestly, I can’t take a bad photo with it. It draws just like 85ii, nearly identical look down to nuances in bokeh and vignetting pattern. But it is way better when it comes to purple fringing. It’s still there and even in the same spots (!) but it’s almost unnoticeable now unless you are looking for it. I predict this lens is gonna be a huge blockbuster for Canon including cinematography. I never paid full retail for a lens and especially not 1.5+k but I now ordered one from BH and it’s out of stock backordered. I am a huge fan of 50L and 85L look especially for fine art portraiture and the new lens is just as good, contrary to so reviews saying it’s got ‘clinical’ look similar to 24-70ii. Not in my experience, I am very defensive when it comes to 50L/85L and the new lens retains the majic in rendering and pop colors. I would not say it’s much sharper than 85ii, the difference should more noticeable on 5dsr. Using my 5div, the difference in sharpness is very subtle at 1.2-1.8 and then indistinguishable. I do feel that 1.4 len produce better results from a distance - full outdoor body portraits. It’s consistently sharp unlike 85ii when you need to hunt for magic.

Is purchasing this lens worth it if I can sell and consolidate both Sigma 85 1.4 Art & Sigma 135 1.8?
