But it's your photo... why leave it up to me to crop?

I think what he was implying, was that he appreciated the critique, but that he was happy with his photo just the way it is. That all. ;)

Ha no, say for example this image. It was taken for Mandalay Bay. They might want to use it and add text. I would never crop an image because later they will say, hey do you have any more room on this image? I always leave space for them to add text or a logo or a caption. I still have the rule of thirds applied here and yeah i do agree itd be nicer closer, but I just left it to get the ambiance of the grill and flames for the client to crop if needed.

There are a load of times on shoots where I have wanted to go closer, we all know the closer you get to a dish the better dof, but more often than not the client will request to have more room to add what they need so I have to pull back. Leave some space for the designers to do their thing also.

I actually knew this answer. I was baiting you into a conversation. Sorry.

As a commercial photographer I understand the need to leave room for context, but this forum isn't that case. My view is that a forum is a showcase... a portfolio, in a way. To that end shouldn't you be presenting your best version, not the potential for your best version? That's my only point. But as others pointed out, in the end it's your image. I just wanted to present a different point of view. If for nothing else, to others browsing this post. :-)
