Depends on which era and which model, but the most recent models, even Canon, have sensors that do just as well as the APS-C sensors in the Rebels and xxD lines.

What you lose is a view finder (unless you buy an accessory for some models), and the AF system may not be quite as quick as the phase detect AF you get on a DSLR when not using the sensor to do AF. Each generation improves in this area though.

For example, the most recent Canon M6:

If I was in your position I would look at at picking up a used Canon 80D and the Canon 18-135mm IS USM lens plus a Yongnuo Speedlite (I prefer the 600ex-rt II). The 80D has the new sensor that increases DR and low and high ISO performance. The 18-135 lens comes in a few flavors - the IS STM version is a bit cheaper than the USM and has good IQ, but the IS USM has the Nano USM system which lets it focus super fast. Finally, a good Speedlite will let you shoot in low light without having to introduce noise with high ISO.

Just my $0.02, I have everything I suggested and despite having better glass I always come back to the Nano USM lenses for their amazing focus speed.

I agree with TreeburnerCT about the nano-USM lenses. I have the 18-135 and 70-300 nano. Both are quite amazing.

Pasta with sardines, tuna and capers...quite delicious! And since I cooked only for myself, I was able to take a proper shot with mty camera, no rush :)

I would say an affordable full frame 5d, 5dii or 6d would be a nice upgrade with a decent lens!

yea but,
there is no way i can afford a new camera right now.
to be totally honest i am leaning towards a new lens .

What i have in mind is get a lens that is also compatible with FF for future upgrade to FF.

thank you gentleman.

A used or refurbished Canon 24-105L f4 IS can be had for about $500. Built like a tank, this Swiss Army Knife of a lens, plus a cheap triggered strobe or two, would work pretty well for your stated uses and would still be useful if you go FF down the road.

You can also really trust the secondhand descriptions at Wearhouse Express. (external link) They are my local camera shop of choice, and I have bought from them quite a bit. It's good being able to go in store and look at the product and compare it to the description. I've looked at stuff rated 8 and wondered what exactly the cosmetic marks they were talking about were, it was really nice. London Camera Exchange, LCE, also seem to be pretty good with descriptions too from the items I have seen in several different branches over the years.
