Surely it wasn't in music classes that you picked up knowledge of ASCII symbols. I mean, where do people normally learn these technical things?

I actually took a few CS classes including ANSI C and abstract data structures, both of which helped me in my later coursework in electrouacoustic music. ASCII was a development within the telegraphy community of radio amateurs, military network operators, and industrial technicians. Originally most people learned about ascii because they worked on teletype machines. Ascii has definitely blossomed since those days.
