Found a deal on a 35f2 is, but I already have a 40stm... Is the difference worth the trade-off?

The two lenses mentioned by the OP are FF designs. I'm not sure what body he plans to use them on, but if it's a full frame body your lens won't be usable on it. Mark

edrader "I am not the final word" More info | I bought the 35 macro to use with my 80d, which is my back-up to my 5d4. trying to get more utility out of the 80d. i've owned the 35f2 in fact I was an early adopter of the lens when it was expensive and scoffed at by may forumers. it's a brilliant lens but when you own lenses like the 24-70L II and 16-35L III primes that fall into those focal lengths (both you mentioned) are lenses I just have no use for. http://instagram.com/edraderphotography/

Additionally if you occasionally want to manually focus, the focus ring of the 40mm STM is incredibly narrow, and being STM, manually focusing is fly-by-wire which I find very inconvenient, and for my purpose, almost useless. I own two STM lenses and would not want to manually focus with either of them. The Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM has a acceptably wide focus ring considering the size of the lens, and rotation is smooth and well damped. So, your choice really comes down to what your goals and expectations are. Mark

But seriously They're both great lenses/lens to have but out of the two I like the 35 F2 IS the best sure you have paid more for it but it's very worthy to have in your camera bag.

If you need the small size keep the 40... but you will be missing out. The 35 is a sleeper. You'd never know how good it is until you've tried it. It also sings on a crop. I loved mine on the 7D2. The size/weight savings of the pancake was not nearly as much of an advantage on a large camera body compared to having F2, really fast USM AF, 4 stop stabilization, and the modern micro-contrast of Canon' s latest lenses. The 35 F2 IS is better in every way. The 40 STM is loud to focus, fairly sluggish to focus, only F2.8, not stabilized, and you compromise those things for the sake of it being a pancake. If you you want the smallest, the pancake is it. But if you're rolling around with a 1D or 7D body, small isn't the game, so get the better lens. The 35 F2 IS is the much better lens. The 35 F2 IS behaves and outputs like an L lens. It's better than a 35L MK I. Very best, Yep. Completely agree! Mark

The 35 F2 IS and 50 STM are similar in length when attached to the body. The 35 F2 IS is only a little bigger. But the point of this comparison is to show how a pancake really doesn't save you space on larger bodies, or gripped bodies, etc. The 35 F2 IS is bigger than the 50 STM & 40 STM, but not by a lot, it's still a fairly compact lens when you consider that it's stabilized and F2. Stabilization adds a lot of girth and length to the lens design. The lens hood adds more to it. But if the camera body is big, the lens size is relative, and a pancake frankly doesn't save anything on a big body. It's not going in your pocket. ![]() ![]() 35 F2 IS on a 1D with Lens Hood: ![]() 5D with 50 STM & 5D with 35 F2 IS: ![]() 35 F2 IS on a 5D with lens hood reversed. https://flic.kr/p/HeRiEQ Very best, Frankly. other than price, I always wondered why the 40mm pancake was so desirable to some people. The 35mm f/2 IS USM offers so much more in every way. Yes it is more expensive, but it's still moderately priced for a fast 35mm, especially one with stabilization. Mark
