Awesome image Mike! I’d love to visit that park...might have to start doing a little planning.

It's pretty awesome. I was there last week and its definitely off season. Rooms are cheaper and most restaurants are closed. I flew into Vegas and did the three hour drive to the Park.

Thanks!!

used the expodisc..
i still made a slight adjustment to WB in post..but much better than what AWB was giving me

but skin tones were not a struggle with this pic.. some slight adjustments but that typical (for me)

i did the best i could .. before the shoot she warned me she had a bit of a break out (skin)..
so yeah.. lots of pimples and such to work out .. not 100% satisfied in that regard , but at my level i usually get to the point where i kinda fixed it but then if i continue to try to get it 100% i start making it look worse.. so "kinda fixed" will have to suffice .. atleast till my skill level goes up

yah the expodisc is not 100% perfect but it gets you really close.

yah learning when to stop retouching is also a thing to figure out. I do cleaning blemishes using the healing brush tool and sometimes spot healing. Then I go dodging and burning. Start dodging and burning without zooming at all. then zoom to 100%. Don't zoom more than 200% otherwise you'll overdo it.

I do zoom a lot on beauty retouching because those ones are really like pixel level retouching. they don't care if the model looks fake, it's all about the beauty products they're trying to sell.

I hope this is helpful. if you look at the face you want to retouch, it is often helpful to remember that the thing that makes any imperfection stand out is the abrupt difference in tone from 1 side to the other. what I mean by that is if for example you look at a wrinkle, you will quickly realize that the wrinkle has a light side and a shadow side. so if you lighten the dark side you in effect lighten the wrinkle. this also applies to pimples and scars. although there could be some other factors like discoloration that is still the basic concept. there is an abrupt change and hence quickly noticed. if you work at making that change less abrupt or totally remove the difference you pretty much eradicate the imperfection.

this is also the concept of the ring light and Peter hurley's lighting. the light floods the face where no shadows on the front part of the face can occur making the subject appear flawless

I have a question on white balance when using strobes outside with a expo disc or similar item. On my Canon, I take a picture and use it to set the custom WB, on my a6500 its like a live view custom WB. How can you do this with strobes? Does the A7 series use something different or you setting the K to 5600-5700 and adjusting?

Set a custom white balance, preferably with a grey card or expodisk. AWB is set by the ambient light, and it will be off if you start triggering artificial lights.

Thanks Alfredo. Mine doesn’t even look all that sharp at 24 if I’m being honest.
