I have found the tripod collar of Nikon 80-400 aFS may fit Sigma C because of 84mm diameter. Strictly regards to IQ (color, contrast, tone, sharpness), I think both lenses are about equal, including the sharpness at 400mm and 600mm, respectively. 100-400L is lighter and less bulky and therefore easier to handle. I like that Sigma comes with the focal distance "Lock" button, VERY useful especially when shooting moon. 100-400L would slide. Sigma, while heavier, is very handholdable, but I use a monopod anyway for greater stability.
