I tried using the Sony for some portraits this morning. Mostly just killing time. I had a little frustration to dig through the menus and figure out how to turn off having the EVF show me the exposure (total black with flash - makes it hard to compose). But I got it done, and every time I do one of these new things, I update "My Menu" with the new find.

I'm limited right now to bouncing a flash mounted on camera. I bought a Flashpoint flash, which I believe can be integrated into a low cost wireless setup. But I have to dig into that a bit more. Just one trigger with this would actually get me mostly there, as I can just about live with one off-camera flash.

If anyone wants to chime in.....I think this Flashpoint is Adorama's branding of Godox units.

I have an idea for a shot like this, its been done before in other places and I have always wanted to do one...tonight would be a good night for it...but I feel like complete hell today...fighting off the tail end of a bout with the flu...

so...this is going to be a n00b like question...on the a9, I have the A-EL button setup for Eye-AF...if I want that to be triggered by a remote, how would that get setup? Can it be setup to trigger Eye-AF via remote control?

My version of LR since the upgrade to 7.2 has been freezing. I think it has to do with synchronization with LR mobile. I have to restart it and then it will work for for a while before losing its mind.

I don't use LR mobile, so hoping I have no issues, but I'm installing the update right now. If I do have similar issues then I'll just take it as a harder push moving me into the C1 camp.

Although I've never had any issues in the past with updates (even when others are complaining)

Pick one of these.

This one is what I have and it works great.

Here's what I think is the newly released "Pro" Trigger. Not much more expensive. Might be worth looking into. I think you have a little more off camera control, i.e. can change the zoom wirelessly (can't do that with the x1T)

I've just updated LR, PS, and ACR on my PC and other than needing to restart PS due to hanging (not freezing) on a save image (both 'save' and 'save as') command I have experienced no problems yet and the performance boost in LR is considerable. LR has now backed off from the edge of banishment for me (for now).

Also I watched a **Scott Kelby LR tut this morning - I rarely view anything from Kelby any more - and he did point out something I liked about the recent editions of LR: the auto-toning now actually makes the image look decent. I haven't ever bothered with the auto-tone button for many years - just seems kinda noobish - however, one of the real niceties of C1 is that it makes your images look good right away by default. I like that about C1. I have no need or reason to view my raw images in the most drab awful condition possible. And auto-toning images just provides a nice starting point; we're still the masters of our edits! So, I may change my workflow to incorporate auto-toning when importing to LR.

**I don't pay much attention to Scott any more - have moved on - but I'll always have a tremendous level of appreciation for him in getting me started with photography. His Digital Photography books were the best way I've ever seen of explaining to beginners how to take the shots they want to take. I learned so much so fast so easily. My first ILC was a Canon 'Rebel' purchased along with an EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 back in June 2007.

_______________

Processed in the updated LR and PS, this image was captured using a lens that I also need to pull back from the edge of banishment (selling) - it's just a fantastic little Goldilocks 50(ish)mm lens that is just the right small size and weight, and just the right great bokeh and sharpness.

I like the vignetting that helps strengthen and add attention to the leading lines of the railing along the path.

Thanks Gene; that was what I was aiming for. :) I was also wanting the vignette to convey a sense of passing through a mysterious forest.

The boardwalk is over a beaver pond area that has a neat wild-but-serene feel to it. Would like to get some good captures of the pond at some point. A 100-400mm GM would have been handy here as there was a quite large group of mallards in the pond.

Yeah, that's the one. Adorama sells the same item branded as Flashpoint. For that price, I can't go wrong.

I remember when the terrible IR triggers were pretty expensive, and RF triggers were very expensive. And if you wanted TTL, the remotes were quite expensive. Now I can get a $46 trigger that will work directly with a $107 flash - plus no receiver (and extra batteries) needed. Nice.

The other irony is, once upon a time I bought a somewhat expensive TTL RF trigger system for Canon. Now that I've used it for years I've come to realize that TTL is not of much value for remote flash work. I tend to just set it all manually anyway. The ability to control flash power from the camera is still nice though....less walking around.

On another note - I'm loving the accuracy of my A7r3 focus, even with adapted Canon lenses. The first limitation I hit is with the 100-400L II, it works fine with the center point, but hunts if the AF point is anywhere but center.

Today I have been looking more closely at comparing image quality of LR vs C1 and, while I am really happy with the performance boost in the LR 7.2, I am looking at images in C1 that look better and I just can't replicate it in LR. I'm seeing more detail - more tonal contrast - in C1 even though the clarity slider is at zero and I have added clarity and more sharpening in LR.

I can't say I'm at all happy to switch raw converters because it means having to pay for two raw converters to get the one I want. Adobe's subscription pricing is ridiculous. $9.99 for both PS & LR or $19.99 for just PS or $49.99 for everything.

I have always been an advocate of the Capture Clip however after today I thought I’d share a word of caution

I was out on the beach today trying to get a long exposure when the unthinkable happened. Firstly although I had my tripod I had forgotten the head as i last used it with my monopod. So with a bit of quick thinking I removed my Capture Clip (v2) and screwed it the tripod thread to make a temporary quick release. All ok so far. However it all went down hill rapidly when I moved the tripod and my beloved A7Rii and fe85 came tumbling off and plummeted towards the rocky shore. I have to admit my heart stopped however at the last moment I managed to get my foot under neath it and it gently rolled off my foot onto the stones. No damage done (huge sigh of relief). However on inspection I’ve discovered that the catch that holds the plate onto the clip doesn’t spring into its locked position. Although it’s a great concept I think I will stick to a holster case from now on
