Believe it or not, I just set it to 25s exposure with a 10s countdown, balanced it on a canoe seat, propped up the camera with my wallet to get a reasonable angle toward the horizon, hit the shutter and crossed my fingers. I did that maybe, 7 times or so. Worked through a range of shutter speeds between 10 and 30 seconds. I got 3 keepers but the one I posted was my favorite.

I've been really happy with those kinds of shots on the G7X. I've got a few more from other evenings that turned out equally well as far as clarity goes on the stars.

Thanks for your response - but you still have not said what your focusing setup was.

I live the way you set up your makeshift tripod! Perhaps if it had not involved some money, it would not have worked :-P

Haha right, I think there was about $35 in the wallet. Helps for sure.

Focusing.... I'm not sure what the settings were, but nothing exotic. Looking back at the manual I don't believe I've ever changed any of the settings. Basic AF, focused on the treeline on the horizon refired AF until the live view showed something that looked ok. I may have used MF, but I don't think so. In general, I didn't worry about that too much - I was far more concerned about shutter time, framing, and keeping my half-drunk friends from jostling my "tripod".

Thank you for that. :-)

I must remember always to have my wallet in future!
