There were clouds forming overhead which gave the brighter stars an odd glow effect. I'm afraid that I couldn't compose a better shot in the dark because my camera was already low on the ground and I was in the Funnel Web Spider capital of the central coast (and they are known to crawl over the grass en-mass late at night). I had to walk for half an hour in pitch black darkness to get to the lighthouse because they close the road at sunset to reduce problems with local lads. The orange glow is coming from the distant coastal town of Terrigal. This lighthouse is 104 years old now... and was built in 1903 and sits at an odd angle on the ground... it's not level (note the varying thickness of the stripe of black paint at the base). The long exposure enabled the white sides of the building to show up in the dark... but it was pitch black (except for the yellow-white light coming from the aperture of the Light lenses)... I used a Tungsten White Balance to enhance the blue in the night sky. This is my view of the lonely stretch of dark road to the lighthouse. The light on the treetops is from the lighthouse lantern as it rotated past while I took this picture. It's said to be haunted by the spirit of murdered hitchhikers and shipwreck victims from the 1800s. I could smell a rotting body in the dark at midnight on my walk back to the end of the road where my car was parked and I was relieved to find the body of a dead rabbit was the source. The ghost of hitchhiker Jenny Dixon is said to haunt this area. She was (according to local spooky legend) assaulted and died from her injuries when left in the scrub by 5 men... who allegedly all took their own lives - one at a time in grisly fashion, citing her ghost as the cause. You can Google some of the stories as it forms part of the local urban legend lore here. The lightouse is also the location of many, many shipwrecks from the 1800s to the 20th century. One of which was the Janet Dixon (no relation to Jenny). The ghost of a woman who reaches towards people is said to appear on this unlit road at night and it is presumed to be one of those lost in the many wrecks... the anchors of some of the larger boats are displayed near the lighthouse. There's a beach named Jenny Dixon beach just a few hundred meters away... and that's said to be a particularly haunted beach. I've spoken to quite a few of the locals and they all have different spooky stories of their own about this place. I'm not particularly superstitious but it really gets creepy in some of these locations. The discovery of a scarecrow and even some mannequins dressed as clowns tied to trees in the pitch black has ruined many an evening for me.
