This is the blurb I was referring to -

“While offering the same high-performance optical design as other lenses in the Art line, the new Sony E-mount models will feature a newly developed control algorithm that optimizes the autofocus drive and maximizes the data transmission speed. In addition, these lenses will be compatible with Sony’s Continuous AF (AF-C) and high-speed autofocus, which are not addressed by SIGMA MOUNT CONVERTER MC-11. Like the converter MC-11, the lenses will be compatible with in-camera image stabilization and in-camera lens aberration correction, which includes corrections for peripheral illumination, chromatic aberrations, and distortion.”

Doesn’t quite say what I had thought it had

Since they specify its a new control algorithm, it sounds more like a software/electronics update than a change to the actual AF motor.

It would be grand if manufacturers would provide a yearly-updated road map of their planned product releases. They don’t have to promise dates or features, just say what they plan to be working on. Recent camera releases by Sony have created a fog of confusion.

When the a9 was released many have just assumed there will be an a9R and maybe an a9S. Is that true though? I have my doubts. Sony could tell us.

Likewise, after the a7R III was released I saw commenters on forums like this suggest that there probably wouldn’t be an a7 III, yet here we are.

And even lately I’ve seen the suggestion that there might not be an a7S III. The a7 III looks to be marvelous for video, so should a7S II owners jump on the a7 III? Again, Sony could easily help out their customers saying “yes/no” they are working on an a7S III and “yes/no” it’s next in the queue. Again, they don’t need to promise a shipping date or provide any specs.

I had the same thought, though it might not make good business sense to show your hand to your competitors before you play it.

But yeah looking back at my experience with Sony, since the whole system was maturing overtime it was a whole lot of buying stuff because it was the best/only option available, only to sell it later on (sometimes a few months later) when the piece of gear I really wanted was released. Not really faulting Sony per-se, as that just comes with the territory when you buy into a new ecosystem that is aggressively building itself out. But yes a road-map would have been nice.

Sometimes it seems that even Sony doesn't know what they're going to do in the near-term though lol. I think where they are now with the FE mount is very different from where they first started.

In my quest to upgrade from my A7mkii to the new A7mkiii, I have hit a 5 foot 2 inch brick wall called the wife.

This is going to take more work than I was hoping :P

it's really unbelievable but true. that's why i showed it here. even when sony sensors with that level of darkness, it's amazing how clean. i think he's using luminosity mask.

Well, he's adding in images in the TVs so. . . I think he's fudging a bit. He could be doing it all with one exposure, but then I'd wonder why. It's actually more work that way than using two or three shots to get your highlights and shadows.

Thanks man! We had fun. I hope to do more of this type stuff this year.

Just need a reasonably affordable and fast 35mm prime. Oh, and an extra few thousand bucks to spend on myself!:-P

Look at the Sigma 30 f/1.4 DC. It is a great affordable lens that is really sharp.

A few from last night using the a6500 and the Canon 24-70 II. I'm beginning to like this combo.

From my impression of the released lenses, I think what sigma is doing is customized firmware for every lens, and the MC-11 wouldn't be able to hold all that data.

I think that's why sigma hasn't included the 24-105, 24-70, 120-300, 150-600 and 500. The last three arguably most needed in Sony's lineup, and would be big regardless.

Personally, I'd love to see an updated 300-800 f/5.6 with an FE mount. I've been on the fence about picking up a Sigmonster, I think if there was one with an FE mount I'd find myself buying it, as well at trading in the 1Dx for an A9.

I was talking about needing a fast affordable 35mm prime for FF if I was to pick up an A73. The sigma is APS-c. My current 24mm gets me that Fov right now.if I went back to FF kit I’d need a 35/85 combo that won’t cost a fortune. The FE 85 exists, but we still need a 35.

Congrats Travis. I have everything I need to qualify except a portfolio. I don't think my Flickr page of snapshots will cut it.

I spent a lot of time the last couple of months updating my website to showcase all of my paid work leading up to applying...
