For me the improvement in the A7Riii EVF while shooting manual focus is significant. It was one of the primary reasons I upgraded my A7Rii.

When I'm shooting with my 5DsR I'm constantly wishing it had an EVF like the A7Riii.

Biggest improvement is during manual focus.

the blackout free of the a9 is simply one of the coolest things I have ever had on a camera...to not lose sight of your subject, especially in scenarios where you don't want to miss something or need to stay tracking on the subject...its great. I just looked through both with the same lens, same exposure settings...I can't really see a big difference...oh, and the a9 does much better with AWB than the A7R2...

Thanks Travis, Tim, and Carlo. Trying to weigh which camera I’d prefer to go with. Probably won’t decide until January, but I’m collecting mental notes along the way.

I gotta say this magmod system is expensive, but really nifty. I picked up the magbounce today. It's supposed to be used like a softbox, but I used it kind of like a flashbender. It throws some diffused light forward, and bounces a harder light behind me.....so a diffused, somewhat directional light.

The magbounce is massive, ridiculous looking piece of silicone, but it works and its super fast and convenient. Anyone who's ever had to attach a modifier on the fly will appreciate how quickly you can slap these things on.

magbounce + mag gel (half CTO). White balance doesn't match. quick half-assed PP:

Yup. I had it on an 860ii. There's a rubber grip with magnets on it that you fit on the head. I've used it with everything from the 860II, 350, and ad200

@Carlo...that looks like a pretty nifty system. I’d love to see some more shots. Does it work as easy as the video makes it look?

so i told the Boss i'd take her to see "Red sparrow" Tuesday (tomorrow) .. this promise was made a week ago .. she's excited...

But my 85 GM got held up i suppose due to the fact that i ordered day before a jewish holiday i didn't know existed.. and possibly weather (we had strong storms that left many areas without power).. normally i get things at most 2 days from ordering .. its been more than that .. but like i said cirmcumstances delayed shipment/delivery ( i assume that's the reason)

in cany Case its supposed to arrive tomorrow .. Tuesday..

odds are .. ill be at the movies .. in which case they'll leave it at the closest ups pick up location.. but from past experience they don't get it till late and don't log it in (so they cant give it out ) till the next day .. but they don't open till about noon:-(

 why is life so difficult..

I got a question for you guys, kind of Sony related :)

My parents asked me to look into a budget travel camera for them. They print some 4x6's with it, and make the occasional Costco photobook.
They are not too prone to upgrade their phones that often, so still using the Samsung Galaxy S5's, probably not going to upgrade anytime soon. That is where most of their pictures come from, and sometimes from a very old Canon P&S.

They are not looking to spend very much, probably in the 200-400$ range, depending on what I recommend to them.

I am having a very hard time coming up with a good choice in my research, so figured I'd ask, perhaps some of you have had previous experience with a backup/compact P&S that you'd used.

From what I have found, they'd be better off with at least a 1" sensor camera, because it goes way smaller from there, and doesn't seem much better than the S5's.

It starts from as low as the Sony RX100 and the Canon G9 X ii for about 450$ at the moment (or perhaps I could find the original Canon G9 X for cheaper). I cannot find anything cheaper than that, anything else is a very small sensor, and does not seem worth it.

Then there's some Panasonic (LX10 and such) for about 550$, and then there's m43 like LX100 for 650$. But then you're getting into Crop prices, and they might as well pick up either the a5100 kit, or the a6000 kit or something.

Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Be it for a cheaper P&S that I might've missed, or a suggestion towards the mid-priced ones, or anything else.

This would likely be used in auto, with and without flash. You know, the usual non-photographer parent stuff. A good camera to last them a while.

Sorry about such a rant, but I'm just very unsure on how to proceed.

David I shot a9 or Riii alternating daily for 10 days in Florida.
If the house is on fire I'd grab the a9.
I remember calling a9 a bellwether when it landed.....that hasn't changed.
The Riii is just a super usable Rii now.

EVF. Riii vs a9. Width/color/'real world' look samie same to my eye.

The difference is when you start imaging. The zero blackout for what I do mostly it seems (I need to move from BIF, I'm getting stereotyped) is just unreal for staying on the target=abs. no distraction.
Better than that is the acquisition. Instantaneous.

The only negative is when I can't get close enough.

Carlo here's your answer.

Vinz I guess I'm one who doesn't mind Lanier, but that vid lead to Toni and Chelsie and I thought I was watching the Kardashians do a camera review. Of that genre I like the goober from The Camera Store or Max Yureiev (sp?), they seem more common man.

Thanks for the insights Robert. Wow, a9 seems awesome!

I think I screwed up my question. I was wanting to know if the EVF in the a9 AND a7R III is a lot better than what I’m used to in the a7R II. The a7 III does not have the upgraded EVF and I’m trying to decide if that’s a big deal.
