I think it's a combination of things.
Didn't this use to be a canon forum?

And so anyone who had a 50mm for example had one of 3 possibilities.

Now with it being open to any camera , well there's alot more possible.

I think this is one factor. Plus what s already been mentioned ,, places like #ig where sharing photos is alot easier, especially if you want less discussion about photos

Hey, I didn't really expect a huge wave of support for my views on the 'kit sample photo archives' and ... thank you, Dillan_K, Takaki and Maxdave ... I didn't exactly get one.

I still strongly prefer the notion of looking at the characteristics/character/capability of gear through the 'lens' of photographs to the notion of looking at the qualities of photographs through the 'lens' of gear. I really like being able to see (in one place) images that fall into the same thematic family but that are taken with a whole variety of camera bodies and lenses ... and I think that I can get a much better understanding of the capabilities of different kit approaching things that way. Ironically, the often maligned 50mm f/1.4 would come out very well from this approach, I believe.

I'm not totally averse to the kit-focused image sample threads. I recognise they are useful to people trying to evaluate purchasing choices. But I think that, after a while, the extra benefit to potential buyers of additional posted images in these threads gets to be vanishingly small and I don't really see the value in continuing to keep them open. It's not true that they would disappear from view as a result ... the threads would still be highly visible in the Sample Photo Archives sub-forum.

Oh well ... I thought I'd just take the opportunity to explain myself again. I'm not expecting to miraculously win every/anybody over to my view of the world.

David.
Comment and (constructive) criticism always welcome.

Is Canon ever going to update this lens. 1993 is ancient.

I have been waiting for an update for years, but I think I will just get the Sigma ART 1.4 - that is incredibly sharp and I think a new Canon version would cost the same anyway.
