Agree with all the posters saying "go for it", unless you are expecting logistical issues or similar, and don't want to get your new baby all banged up. (I can understand that. Went on a short trip to Germany last month and didn't take anything other than my G1xII because I just didn't want to hassle with it). If that's not what's giving you second thoughts, go for it. Best way to learn new equipment is by using it.

What seems to have been lost by the OP is that the manual for purchase covers six lenses (see list below), one of which is the EF 500mm f/4.5. But the same exact manual will be supplied for all six, several of which Canon will supply for free. The 600mm f/4 is available at https://www.usa.canon.com …m-f-4l-is-usm?tab=manuals (external link) for instance. So download the free version and take the lens with you! There are plenty of bald eagles in Florida, all waiting for their pictures to be taken.

EF 200mm 1.8L
EF 300mm 2.8L
EF 400mm 2.8L
EF 400mm 2.8L II
EF 500mm 4.5L
EF 600mm 4L

The 600mm that Canon has available for download is the "IS" version. It won't help the OP.

ALL of the lenses in the 6 lens manual are the older generation "Pre-IS" lenses, which all six share some differences from the later IS version. ( "Fly by wire" focusing, and a different way to set focus preset for example)

OP,
I just spent the last 20 minutes digging through my archive and was amazed to find that in fact I do not have a .pdf copy of the manual for this generation of Canon super telephotos :(

The fact that I have owned the 200mm f/1.8L twice and never read a manual astonishes me. I was sure I had one somewhere.

For the non-IS lenses, virtually everything you need can be extracted from the thread at http://community.usa.canon.com …USM-They-were/td-p/150307 (external link). It is specifically if for the 400mm 2.8 non-IS but the manuals are the same as I've noted for six lenses.

The switch with the ((‚óŹ)) (see below) is for the pre-set focus. Move the switch to the left to mute it. You should be able to figure out the rest.
