Thanks Archibald.. Seems like it was going for sap. Perhaps a bug lodged somewhere in the trunk of the tree.

Difficult to be sure, but it looks like that might be a sap run above its right foot, but whether the bird is drinking from it or picking off ants coming to the run, I expect someone will enlighten us...

I just checked Wikipedia, that fountain of knowledge, and it says sapsuckers (a kind of woodpecker) eat sap at times of the year. I never knew that, always just assumed woodpeckers ate bugs in dead wood.
