Just saw this on PetaPixel:

https://petapixel.com …ustry-just-lost-a-legend/ (external link)

Chuck was a good guy. I met him at a trade show many years ago, and he was the author of the original Canon Speedlite Reference Guide as well as many informative articles and Canon DLC guides.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Mike

I am so sad to hear this news. :(

I have to admit, I was wondering about Chuck for the last few months, as he was clearly not as active as he had been. My assumption was nothing like this, just assumed he was approaching retirement or something and taking it easy.

I've had the pleasure of speaking with Chuck on a few occasions, and he was always gracious, knowledgeable, and understanding. We had the misfortune of being at odds during the 1D3 fiasco, but he always dealt with me with patience and diplomacy at a time when I was clearly not at my best. His representation for Canon made him the ultimate foil to focus hardware rage towards, and he took that role in stride as well.

It occurs to me that much of what I know about the EOS system came directly from his mouth or his typing. He used to frequent the Rob Galbraith forum and answer questions directly there as well as his copious articles published by Canon USA.
It would be silly to try and count the number of times on this forum a debate was interjected with the word's "Well Chuck Westfall said ....." to prove ones point.

Chuck will be missed. I'm tearing up as I think about our loss :(

I, too, would like to express sadness to learn of the passing of a fine gentleman, with whom I had the pleasure of having had contact on more than on occasion for things associated with Canon, and the depth of understanding of their photographic products.

Wow!! Unexpected. The ultimate Canon fanboy but he sure knew his stuff. A true loss indeed. RIP Chuck. :(

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

He'll be missed. Had some exchanges with him a long time ago, he was always helpful and seemed like a genuine nice guy. He left us too soon...
