Hey guys! Been enjoying the photos on this thread! Anyways, been looking to add this lens to my kit, but wondering how fast the focus speed is using the limiter?

My plan for this lens is to use mainly for ring shots and an indoor portrait lens for weddings where the 135L is a bit tight. My plan is to use the limiter to keep the lens in macro range for ring shots and then switch to keep it in the more "normal" range for portraits and reception photos. My 35L + flash is my main workhorse setup for receptions with the 135L taking the odd shot. The idea of a telephoto with IS would be nice for low light receptions.

I'm also considering getting the 85 f1.8 (again) and the non-L 100 f2.8 macro and having two lenses that would be a little more specialized for those uses. Price is about the same for these two use or buying the 100L used.

I like the size of the 100L and love the L build quality, IS, and lens performance and would prefer to have a lens to do both tasks if possible. The 85 f1.8 is a great lens, but I had one before and never really used it after buying the 135L.

Leaning towards the 100L, but would like to hear your input. Thanks!

You might want to ask this in a wedding thread.

I am full time wedding photographer, and I have yet to use this lens for portraits at a wedding.

Thats not saying that this isn't a wonderful lens. We mostly use it for ring shots, and detail shots. But for portraits, I would use the 135 before this any day.

I find that it tends to hunt a little bit in challenging light. The AF isn't "lightning" but it isn't bad either.

The IS does not help with motion blur from your subject. Which is something that we can struggle with. For low light indoor ceremony / reception, I go for F stop over IS any day.

I find that the NON L 100mm macro is a bit sharper than the L. but I like the IS when taking photos of flowers and bugs.

hope that helps.

Yes, that helps a lot. Thanks! I might just go for the 85 1.8 and the non L 100 macro for that budget since they both would excel in different areas.

If you have the budget, I would look into the Tamron 85. or even the Sigma 85. I actually switched from canon portrait primes to sigma and haven't been disappointed yet.
