Anyone had problems with this lens sometimes missing focus?

I've tried it "live" and thought at first that it was me.
Then tried it static on a tripod on static object. And maybe 1 out of 6-8 times it is out of focus...

I miss focus regularly as well. Maybe once or twice in 10 shots if It’s wide open. But this lens on both my 5Diii’s and my 5DIV has better focus accuracy than any of my Canon lens have.

When I say ‘misses focus’ I am talking about not being perfect. Eyelashes, not pupil. It’s rare I get a complete miss that’s not operator error.

Have you used the in-body autofocus micro adjustment?

No. Its not constantly missing.
Out of 10 shots on something steady, the focus is perfect on 7-8 and 1-3 is missed, so a Microadjustment would not change that...

Which focus mode?

On my limited use of a 5D4 when it first came out, my 50Art was much better than it was on the 5D2 but in AI servo it did miss occasionally.

We went to the famous Redrocks Amphitheater for this pre wedding bridal party shoot. This fire truck was coming through the tunnel, he stopped for us, turns on the lights and I kept on shooting. ( I added the flares...;-)a )

Nice one Dennis! I've just picked up the Star Adventurer Mini tracking mount (finally!), and gave it a test run the other night out at Warrill View towards Cunningham's Gap. It seems to work well for 2 minute exposures with my old EF 35mm f/2 lens :)

Where did you take this one from?

Cheers,
Stephen

Hi Stephen

Thanks, I appreciate your comments.:-)

This was taken at the Green Mountains camp site (Lamington National Park) with no Moon. Polar Alignment (original Star Adventure) was a little tricky as I had to use my red LED head torch to illuminate the polar alignment scope reticule, all of which would have been easier if I had three hands!;-)a

Great to hear that you are getting 2 mins, I might try to push the 50mm to 90 secs and see how the tracking holds up. How is the light pollution at WV?

Cheers

Dennis
