MalVeauX "Looks rough and well used" More info Post edited over 5 years ago by MalVeauX. | Mar 24, 2018 22:42 | #4881 Some lunar action tonight. Around 2pm (Eastern) the Lunar X & V was appreciable, but I was too late to image that. Maybe in April. So in the mean time, I mainly enjoy looking inside craters and specifically like to look at the mountain ranges around some of the maria. Craters Walther, Purbach, Arzachel, Alphonsus & Ptolemaeus.IMAGE LINK: https://flic.kr/p/25pdWE5 Montes Apenninus, Caueasus & Alpes bording Mare Serenitatis with the Vallis Alpes. I specifically like looking at the shadows cast by the jagged spires of the mountain ranges.IMAGE LINK: https://flic.kr/p/25pdWPy Imaged with: 120mm F8.3 (1000mm focal length, 5 inch aperture) achromatic refractor on an Orion Sirius in my observatory (cheap, used, $150) Mount: Orion Sirius / HEQ5 on a concrete pier in my observatory Camera: ASI174MM (used, $400ish) Barlow: GSO 2x (2000mm F17) for mosaic panels (8 of them; 200 frames stacked per panel) Focal extender: Explore Scientific 3x Focal Extender (3000mm F25) for the high resolution surface features; captured 5000 frames for these, stacked the best 25%. Filter: Baader Red 610nm Longpass Filter (red wavelengths are less effected by seeing, so this helps with poor to average seeing conditions) Flat calibration data created with LED tracing pad I capture my data with SharpCap. I stack my data with Autostakkert!2. I further process (deconvolution) with imPPG. Final edits in CS5.1. IMAGE LINK: https://flic.kr/p/22GVfQ3 IMAGE LINK: https://flic.kr/p/22GVeBw Very best,

At this scale it's small, take a look at the 100% scale (on Flickr) to really appreciate the resolution. ![]() Craters Walther, Purbach, Arzachel, Alphonsus & Ptolemaeus. ![]() Montes Apenninus, Caueasus & Alpes bording Mare Serenitatis with the Vallis Alpes. This scope (cheap achromat), focal extender, filter and camera's combined cost is less than lots of lenses being used in this thread.

Very best, And i moved from Photography to astrophotography, i already wasted a lot in photography in the past, wish if i knew i will get into astro then i would save in the past and won't get that much gear for photography Galleries:

Astrophotography is a niche of photography in general, and it can be done with standard terrestrial photography gear, there's just a point where it no longer is the right tool and one has to specialize for different results.

Point being though, the right tool for the job, such as not using a small macro lens with a tiny aperture at long distance on a subject and expect to see any detail at scale. But astrophotography doesn't have to be super expensive. Especially not lunar & planetary. Very best, Even I am about to try a different slant on it using a 4/3 mirrorless, looking forward to some clear nights what my camera (Finally) comes back from the menders.
